I know what you mean and yeah I replayed it again the other week and I literally facepalmed when I got to that part, even knowing (vaguely remembering lol) it was coming.

Yes, the group sex is completely avoidable; I can't remember the way the choices are worded, but they are pretty obvious for the most part. The only slightly obscure choice is the one that gets you the happiest ending, but not that difficult to work out if you are reading the story properly.
