Not Going Back
notgoingback_not going back.jpg

When I first saw Not Going Back on the latest updates page, I wasn’t really impressed by the renders. But then I noticed it in MiltonPowers top 25 (if you’re ever looking for new games, check that list out!), so I decided to give it a shot.

And honestly? I’m really glad I did. The preview shots don’t do justice to the amount of beautiful LI’s you’ll find in this game. The story is solid too. I’ve always been a fan of college settings, and this VN nails that vibe perfectly.

What really sells it are the frat parties and the interactions between all the groups. Tons of characters, lots of fun.

Definitely a Top 10 game for me.

Thanks for the shout out yoyojrt. I know people are getting a bit sick of the college theme. But this one really is done well. It doesn't have the exposure of the other ones because until now, the dev worked on it without a patreon. It is one of my very top favorites too.

I’ve got a soft spot for college games. Might be because I’m still young and only just got out of that phase myself, so the stories click with me. :giggle:

Really fun game with a solid start. I like that the story plays out day by day instead of jumping weeks or months ahead like some other VN’s, it makes the pacing feel more natural. The girls are top tier and there’s plenty of choice.

College theme again? sure, but that doesn’t bother me since I can’t get enough of this genre. The only downside is that some locations or scenes feel a bit empty, not because of the writing, but because there aren’t enough people or background characters to fill the world. Still, that’s a minor flaw compared to everything the game does right.

Definitely staying on my list, and I’m really looking forward to the next update.

The Missing Part

Big update, great update. Chapter 3 was a blast and I really enjoyed the story progression as well as the time spent with the LI's.

The only downside is the long wait. we’re looking at another six months before the next release. But then again, that’s the case with almost every game. What makes it easier is knowing that the dev has already announced the Chapter 4 release.

All in all, every single update has been worth the wait so far, and this one just reinforced that. This VN is easily one of my favorites to follow. :D(y)

Something about the top four isn't right, but I can't put my finger on it...

Long wait but many renders and words (so far every release was under 5 months apart)

You might have Hailey on the brain. :ROFLMAO:

I'd also confirm what JPK said, this one is at the higher level of release quickness and content value in the releases.

The wait isn’t criticism, it’s just the opposite actually. It’s more on my end, once I’m pulled back into the game with such a big update, it’s a bit of a bummer when it’s over. ;)

Fun game. The renders are beautiful and the story is not bad. Some things don’t always line up perfectly, but that didn’t ruin the fun for me. I had a good time playing it and it’s definitely better than some people give it credit for.

My Favorite Games based on Renders and Visual Quality.

After replaying Dreamland recently, I was reminded just how visually stunning that game really is. It inspired me to put together a list of AVNs that stand out for their visual quality and overall presentation.

I’ll admit that sometimes I enjoy the visuals more than the story (not always, but often enough:p). This post features the AVNs that, in my opinion, deliver the best combination of beautiful renders, strong lighting, and great character and environment design.

Of course, there are many more that deserve a spot here, but I decided to start with five titles that instantly came to mind. I’ll be updating this list as I discover more.

For me, a visually appealing AVN is one where the LI’s look great, the MC looks good, the environments feels alive, and the lighting ties everything together perfectly.

Feel free to share your own picks, I’m always curious which games impressed others visually. (I'm also looking for new games to play, because my to-play-list is getting empty.) :D (y)

Can't forget Race of Life too. One scene especially that impressed me was the post race celebration with Coop and Jasmine and how the renders captured the exhaust of the car and the sunset lighting was pretty awesome.

Beyond Tomorrow probably deserves a mention as well. Obviously Summer Heat. There's a bunch of newer games that r maybe in the tier below, like Moonlight, but the writing and story itself already seem to be much more captivating to easily make up for the marginal difference in render quality between it and eg Summer Heat

For me, the one that really blew my mind visually was Game of Hearts. It's incredible how well-made it is and how much perfection can be achieved in the renders. Other games that also impressed me a lot were Broken Promises, Westview Academy and Law School.

I was really close to adding Race of Life to this first list, but since I already picked WIAB, I felt like I had to include Summer’s Gone too same dev, same quality. Those two also have a special place since they were among the first AVNs I ever played.

I’m actually working on a second list right now with another 5 games, should have it up tomorrow.

Haven’t played Game of Hearts yet, I always thought it was more of a fantasy-style game so I kinda skipped it .
The other three though, I’ve played them all and they’ll definitely make their way into the list soon!

Also haven't yet played Game of Hearts, but had never heard of Broken Promises, so I'll be sure to check that one out. I thought of WVA and Law School but considered them more in the next tier or whatever (ik they're still arbitrary cutoffs) but they're def great games.

Can't forget Chasing Sunsets either. And Shattered Dreams also deserves a mention

This isn't meant as self promotion. I happen to like the discussion and be a dev as well. Although my game is currently only up to chapter 2 and it is AI art, I wonder if that's a factor in your search for reality? I know AI art can be quite dividing here :), although my main focus is on the romantic/mystery story line and less on the visuals. I wonder what your thoughts are. Secrets in Focus.

Chasing Sunsets is a personal favourite as well. The art was amazing and the story was great too. I liked how they limited the number of LI's to keep the realism in check.

If you had to choose between a great story and horrible visuals, or the other way round?

I think I'm in the minority around the zone, but I would take story over visuals every time.
