Don't know about you, but I feel like if the game is called
My Special Summer Vacation 2
(make sure to take a note of that big "2" at the end) then it's a pretty big hint that this game is actually a sequel, and not a remake of the first game. As for similarities in story/gameplay - many other games of this developer are very simillar in nature, but that doesn't mean that all of them are remakes of one another.
How does the character edit system work? It seems made for immersion as everything in here is named to make some sense in-universe, but it's really confusing if you don't already know what it all means

The guide mentions a professor and a bug battle with them at their house on the second floor. I've never met this character. Does anybody know where this person is?

There is nothing to worry, if this game is like his other games, they are straight sex + addition stuff in DLC.
In his previous game, the black guard of Odom, i first saw his character creation tool. You use this tool to create NPC you like and the game will make this NPC and have your guards deliver the NPC to you.
Futa can be created with this tool, but i never actually seen one running around in the game. I do see pregnant woman, but they are just ladies with big bellies and futa are just girls with dicks...
As for shota, they do appear but no one is forcing you to do anything to them. According to the developer's style loli and shota are later DLC addition to the main game and are totally avoidable. And his shota just looks like loli with dicks...
Ignore the shota just like you ignore other guys in the real world and have fun with the ladies, if that is not your style.

The first game is basically this one but more archaic and a different cast. Also buggy though it might be the translation's fault. You literally can't complete the gallery for some characters and it was never fixed. At least as of the most recent build I've seen years ago.
You can set your dick size and they have a unique comment on when you set it to the bigger end.

Kagura V1.02=normal kagura translation.
they removed and changed labels and danced around sensitive loli/shota subjects for obvious reasons.
Kagura V1.02 Fan edited translation=added them back to match the Japanese/previous fan translation version labeling.
it doesn't really matter which version is better. its still the same type of poison.

there's an optional BL Gay MaleXMale content. you can turn it off at the start or in the setting.
Dunno how to fix this but its always after the starting settings when mc is sitting at the bus stop

this is broken. infinite loading mostly. this is the only error i got. other times it was just a infinite loading loop
I don't disagree with you. But it's worth noting that these style of games are based on a popular Japanese tale (I think it was a TV show) so the story beats are always going to be the same or extremely similar.
The dev introduced character customization and a new method of scene rendering. Even though the cast is similar, the relationships did change. I would argue that "more of the same" is what a sequel should be. I believe there are many instances where the sequel went so far off the rails that it stopped being enjoyable.
I guess the only real point is that the two stories aren't connected at all so there's no real need to play the first game.
