One could do SO FREAKING MUCH with a proper approach to shading/texturing and lighting to create a more complex picture with all those fascinating micro contrasts. Look at the stillframes from the recent TV show "Ripley" with Andrew Scott to see what I mean.

And these are just regular flat renders with a desaturation effect and perhaps at best some basic shadows/highlights and brightness/contrast adjustment.
