Makes me wonder... the icons are still showing. But they might be just a cached version from my browser. You can't view them in a separate tab.

Also, it's a good thing the profile pics are stored on the main data servers, otherwise this place would start to look like a usenet forum, lol.

If your using Safari it could be the reason. When this thread was made latest update was pretty much the only place with working images, if you check that linked status page all servers are currently working.

Edit: never mind somehow just clearing browsing history, download history and cached images solved it

I got the same outdated certificate message when I looked into why the pictures wouldn't load.

Yeah, it appears to me to be that the certificate for the attachment servers has expired. Since they use Let's Encrypt, it is probably that someone just forgot to update the certificate.
