Hello everybody! What would be the laptop requirements to make a VN or rpgm game? I would have to see how to even do a VN or rpgm game but I first need to know if its possible with my laptop. I already have a script ready but I'm still new to all of this.
My pc specs is:
MSI 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz (2.30 GHz)
RAM: 16.0 GB (15.7 usable)
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
1.38 TB Storage
Graphics card: 4GB

I'm assuming it shouldnt be a problem to make a game but just in case, would I need a better latop or pc?
Thanks!

For a basic 2d game in renpy, rpgmaker, godot, unity you are good.
Working with 3d render softwares like daz3D would harder, dunno honey select specs, could work with basic Koikatsu.
If you make hand draw digital art or pixel art no problems too.
The 4gb gpu is a dedicated chip? Which model?

It's an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop
It says utilization 0%
gpu memory 0.0/11.9 gb
dedicated gpu memory 0.0/4.0 gb
shared gpu memory 0.0/7.9 gb
temperature 50c

You're good on the engine side of things, especially if you're going for RPGM or Renpy. Where you'll struggle is 3D software, if you're going for that. 4gb VRAM is going to hold you back quite a bit, if you're going for high quality or larger scenes. Illusion's stuff (Honey Select 2 or Koikatsu) will work a bit easier in to that budget, provided you don't go overboard on lights/characters/fx, etc. For daz, rendering will take a really long time.

I've come across game developers using computers that, compared to yours, some people would consider absolute junk, and yet they managed to bring their ideas to life. I'd even say it's better for learning to start with a more limited equipment, saving the upgrade until you truly understand the ideal workflow for your goals.

Think i got it, your i7-11800H has a Intel UHD Graphics Xe 32EUs integrated graphics unit and a 3050 ti dedicated graphics unit. Are you planning in using 3D softwares for rendering?
I am not versed in daz3D, i do not know if the render fails if the scene exceeds your dedicated VRAM (4GB for the mobile 3050ti) or it only happens if it exceeds the shared 8GB. I would say that if you pay attention to the textures and poligons, maybe targeting 1080p or even 720p you could still make good renders, even more so since you have an RTX.

But other than heavy 3D scenes you are mostly good, as Insomnimaniac said, the engines will not be the bottleneck of your work flow.

As a rule of thumb, if your computer was made in the last 15 years, it can be used to develop RPG Maker and VN games. Keep in mind that you can still fuck up and make the game unplayable or laggy as fuck even on RPM or a VN engine. Learn the art of Reduce and Reuse - this applies to code and art assets

The only bottleneck, as others pointed, is 3D graphics. Since you have a nvidia card, you can render DAZ3D scenes, but those can take forever - rendering a full scene: 2 characters + background, 1920x1080, on my GTX 1070 would take 10-15 minutes back in 2021.
Thankfully, there are alternatives for doing 3D.

I'm still not even sure what type of game I'm doing and how hard it could be. VN would be ideal but RPGM is another option but I haven't gone with the basics. First I have to save up some space on my laptop then find out HOW to make the game, then see how much it will affect my laptop. I dont wanna go crazy on renders: So a good example could be this https://f95zone.to/threads/forest-camp-blue.808/ or this https://f95zone.to/threads/one-ljubovsky.6640/
Anything more than those renders would be great.

Yeah definetly not ideal to make them to heavy, still gotta figure out how to make the game first. These are the examples to go by: https://f95zone.to/threads/one-ljubovsky.6640/

Totally doable man, and being honest i personally think 720p is still pretty acceptable today, many people play in phones or crappy notebooks, they are porn games after all, the renders not being a full of noise mess and having nice aesthetic appeal (lighting and good camera angles) you are golden!
Good luck boya.

Appreciate all the help, at least that stress process is done, now is onto the heavy stuff.

Take your time experimenting as much as possible by prototyping and doing other small things. Don't rush into making the game you really want before you truly understand how things work and have developed a solid workflow.
