Ah, the inability of the common folk to not self-insert their asses into the protagonist role. Beautiful.

The protagonists of netorare games are often create after the image of the average Japanese otakus/office workers so the goal of these games are most likely self-insert into the cuckold protagonist.

It's not all japanese, just the majority of those that make games. There's probably some social study worth a college degree or something here hmm

My theory is that it's about marketability. Who has the most disposable income? Single dudes. Of those single dudes, which are the most likely to blow money buying or supporting porn games? Betas, coomers, and the like. Guys with strong values, high self-esteem, and success with women might support an artist/developer who produces an objectively good game...but they probably aren't throwing money at the thousands of people churning out cookie-cutter, porn-logic, RPG Maker NTR games. They might pirate that if they're bored and it's easy, but probably not pay for it. Meanwhile the dude who's been single and beta his whole life might have nothing better to spend money on. And if we're talking about a white-collar coomer...yeah, he probably funds the development of a dozen games and has a rack of fleshlights to go with them.

Know your market, know your consumer base, and give them what they want. I figure NTR keeps popping up like a seasonal virus because people make money off of it.

Yeah its like they have that one thing, where they can't handle witnessing potentially emotionally harmful event happening to someone else, even when they are fictional characters and not at all related to them, and still project themselves from a outsider's perspective, and ends up getting uncomfortable because it reminds them of all their own insecurities... what is that shit called again?

I usually don't respond to comments but this one stuck out to me as particularly stupid, human beings are naturally empathetic, you don't need to self insert or project to relate, it's why sane people commiserate with others even complete strangers after tragedy, it's why people cry during touching scenes in a move/anime/game etc, it's ironically why NTR even exists as a damn genre, it's playing on emotional triggers that most normal people have, otherwise in almost every instance it would be just raunchy sex which you can get without the NTR, so no, relating to a MC getting fucked over is not being insecure, if it's done properly NTR is suppose to tap into that almost instinctual response to commiserate and play on it sexually, bad NTR just makes you laugh and move on and is barely any more interesting than vanilla, thinking you're somehow some super chad because you feel nothing from what is meant to be emotional manipulation says more about your frame of mind than the people who are put off by the genre.

funnily, this is exactly what I thought the first time I stepped into western porn games, my reaction was literally "why every single one of these people wants to bang his closest female relatives?"
Without even going into the self-insert stuff, my conclusion is that actually most Vanilla games (as in one-on-one monogamic relationship) are either extremely boring or extremely verbose (some are actually pretty good).
But kinks add the taste of the forbidden, which is basically what porn is for.

Just sharing my input about NTR in games:

To be fair avoidable NTR would actually be a decent mechanic for many RPG and strategy games, personally I'm not afraid of failure, what I tend to find pointless is not being able to fail and improve, mainly because of that I did play Leane of legitimate crown but I don't play NTR plot games in which it's unavoidable, ironically I find myself in a middle ground between harem lovers and NTR lovers, because I want the MC to be able to have a happy ending after the struggle but I want to also have some meaning to that victory, and that means that things can go wrong.

Having said that I always wondered, NTR fans is it an absolute need to have an evil antagonist? personally I was never able to stomach the typical NTR bastard, on the other hand I wouldn't care about it if the one that did the NTR was an overall good person.

So for the first part, as an NTR fan, I MUCH prefer avoidable NTR than not, because you have agency, and much like you said, overcoming pitfalls raises the stakes and makes attaining the love interest more meaningful.

To the second part, I also prefer the antagonists in NTR games to not be evil.

My two favorite NTR games are probably Scars of Summer and Hero Roy's Wedding and I'm gonna talk about both.

In Scars of Summer, the protagonist is defending his love interest against 6 antagonists. I use "defend" lightly because the NTR is very avoidable, but I also understand why they did it that way. You actively have to start the routes with each antagonist; literally doing nothing lets you avoid all NTR, though once a route is started you DO have to actively take measures to prevent the LI from being stolen by that antagonist. The game has a NG+ mechanic, so they took the "Active start" approach to let the player choose which and how many antagonists to fend off. Not all of the antagonists are evil, in fact one of them is genuinely a nice guy that loves the LI and simply puts in more effort than the MC.

Hero Roy's Wedding flips the script somewhat. Here, the MC has 4 LIs and basically the whole town is trying to steal all of them. You prevent this by picking who to spend time with and when, interrupting specific encounters, etc. The game could certainly use more polish, but the basic concept is sound. It's very easy to focus on one LI (and forsaking the other 3) and win her by the end of the game. It's also possible for a harem with more than one, even all 4, but the highest reward also comes with the highest risk, and trying to keep all four (unless you play perfectly) will probably lead to losing all four.

Honorable mention goes to Remote Island Survivors which has a decent plot and concept, but they kinda went lazy on the gameplay loop and all the art/scenes are recycled to hell and back.

A pair that are still in development but showing a lot of promise (especially the latter) are God's Blessing on this Cursed Ring! (an NTR Konosuba parody) and Netoria Tactics: Revolution.

Well, that's what happened when you have too too much "lewd harem comedy that barely got anywhere" genre. Bunch of frustrated and horny teenager that would like to bang the heroine instead because the MC is so freaking dense.

Absolutely adored the ntr/king's harem mechanic of Leane of legitimate crown. Though, it seems I myself got cucked out of a proper ntr ending with that twist towards the end.

Wanted to try and get the other routes as well but, they were a little too vanilla for my liking I think. Still it was a nice interaction between gameplay mechanics and ntr that wasn't just game over rape.

As for the antagonists being evil? Hmmm, I'm not sure. I think it just depends on the writing. I trend towards darker stuff so I do prefer an antagonist that's likely to do or think those things.

Baroque for example was a sexist womanizing bastard but, was up my alley for ntr antagonists. However, the antagonist of Thug Hero Party was similar yet I didn't like it there as much cause of how garbo the story ended up being by the end. Scenes were good though so it's a mixed bag lol.

On topic: Kinda funny how one short comment managed to derail this thread so bad lol. That said, can't say I'm surprised. I remember playing this a while back. Got to the end and thought, wait that's it!? Just more NTR shovelware. A shame really, the cover image is quite nice looking.
