The story was temporarily removed from newer versions. Last version that had the story was 0.50.
Dev says he'll start re-implementing the story back into the game starting from version 0.80.

Right now, you can rank up by grinding fame from repeatable quests. 30 fame for rank 2, and 150 fame for rank 3.

That's a typo in the changelog. 0.75 is the correct version.

0.75 update was a huge gameplay balance rework.
And previous updates added several new locations in the bottom half of the map. To unlock them you need to enter "The forest leading south" location and go to the bottom of the map to unlock the gate.
