This situation is all too familiar to me. The problem here is that the scripts in this location are broken and when you enter this room a second time, the game treats it as a story event in which you had to, among other things, pick up the nymph cult bible to get this guy to unlock the exit. The second time you enter the room, the item is not there and this causes just such a situation.
