Something you could do with doing more 'mature' story telling is involve like essentially what I call a "peer review" where you ask people or your patreons on approval of the writing in essentially a tone that you are going for.
I've gotten in an argument with a dev on this forum about how his decision was an obvious fucking disaster in the making and he justified it by pointing at his poll on his Patreon... where he had lost 95% of his Patrons at that point. Which, in turn, had driven him to come here to beg for money. He had one of the most popular series on this site at one point, it's still in the top all time trending lists, and he set aside the series that made his career to focus an entire game on his least popular side chick(s). And he was already pissing everyone off w/ his inability to hit deadlines, provide updates and then he gave his supporters the chance to get even. Now his fucking career is dead and no one has seen him on his Discord, Patreon, SS, website, etc. His last known appearance was literally on this website arguing with me.
Yeah, get a proof reader. Just don't fucking fan source something that fucking important. Many of the most famous authors in the world have 2-3 people they completely rely upon to proof read and keep all the lore in check. It's not a bad thing until you try to give that power to people who spend all of their time typing one-handed and can barely read to begin with. Most fans don't take this shit seriously. As a developer, YOU HAVE TO. Even on the low end, this is a significantly better gig-based income than most people will have available to them. A few hundred bucks a month where you're also not having to spend hundreds of bucks on gas, also putting wear and tear on your vehicle and your body, is a massive step up from most gig jobs. And all you really need to do is have something most gamers are likely going to have anyway - a decent/good gaming pc.
