I think Once in a Lifetime is a pure dose of entertainment. That's its defining feature. If you like this style of VN("graphicwise"), I'd say go for it.
This title is pretty simple, so I will just refer to the good and bad, without much depth.
Good:
- You are constantly entertained - The story and events move at bullet speed, and your attention is permanently grabbed. It's the principle behind instant gratification, and I for one have nothing against it. It's a really good time, reading this.
- The girls and the adult content - I'm not gonna bother with hypocrisy, I like this particular body type. There's a lot that I could say about this topic, but my argument is simple. In an adult game, the adult content needs "to get you going". Absolute truth of the universe nº3.
(It's death and taxes)
- Humor - It's immature, too on the nose, repetitive, unoriginal, and completely reliant on all kinds of media references, but I laughed way too much to complain. I admit I'm an easy target, and any stupid remark usually gets a chuckle out of me, but why rationalize and hate, instead of flowing with and like?
- A wholesome turn - No spoilers, but I was pleased at how things progress. If you played any "harem-esque" type of game, you know how powerful straight up affection is, after a lot of sexual content. Yes they get very wild in bed, but things also progress in the love front. It's nice.
- I had forgotten about the Neo Genesis Evangelion opening, and Once in a lifetime kindly remind me. Thank you.
Bad:
- The sound - Not much to say, needs a lot of work on all fronts. It's the lowest point.
- The choices numerical value being shown - I don't like it. While it is true that games are made of numbers, some of them need to be hidden with the player's best interest in mind. If I know that X is the right answer, I'm gonna pick it and there goes any agency, right out of the window. I'd save this system for a new game plus mode. I'm always mentioning the illusion of choice, there's none here.
- Nothing that can be classified as great - Completely personal, but at some point, only the stories that do something amazing start to register. There's nothing here to consider, and I doubt this adventure counts as memorable. I'm not bashing it, I'm a demanding poochie. It is, what it is.
This a 7/10 and you can think of it, as a satisfying product that excels at keeping your brain's attention, while also being competent in the adult department. It's worth a buy, but not really my cup of tea.
