But what do I think about Opal?
Well, my mc started out as a very reserved, objective, "It is what it is" kid due to a rough upbringing in part from coming from a shit place to live with low income. Pretty much the only person he could rely on was his Ma, thus he was extremely clingy. During the course of step 1, however, he learns to open up, tear his walls down, and enjoy the company of others (something that the game actually pointed out in step 2 by saying how he wouldn't have acted so social when he first arrived to town, which absolutely blew my mind. This game's sick), this all culminated in Home when, for the first time, my mc exploded. He felt betrayed by his Ma, and it was thanks to the friends he made along the way he managed to get through it (this was also the moment he'd develop a crush on Tamarack and swear he'd keep his friend group together, which kinda leads to another kind of self destructive attitude all together but that's a subject for another time.)
But it was not without his drawbacks, as the experience added another layer to his relation with his Ma. The love is just as strong, but when he feels like he's getting "betrayed" again, contempt that can only be born from true affection emerges and the often happy, sociable mc turns into a moody teen with a very short fuse.
Tldr: she's a very important in my small American town larp.

I personally like that there's so many options to the point it's bringing a wider range of discussions by everyone. Not everything is black and white, hearing everyone's experiences with her whether it being positive, negative or neutral are all great as long as they're not being toxic about it! It's good that it's not "easier"! I personally love Opal but I def see the facts and truths in people pointing out her flaws and neglectfulness (and I do have my own experiences with my parents so I def spot it too). I do think also because the game is more focused on than LIs than it being a game where the NPCs are the main characters, Kab might not have considered all those flaws and how contradicting they can be but then again, maybe she has or maybe now that she most likely knows many of these flaws, she'll incorporate that being confronted in game. Maybe it'll lead to an important point.

Edit: I also think it'll def come up in Step 2, in Step 1 there's not really time to go into the family dynamics because it's the introduction to the game so yk. ++ Step 2 is supposed to be way more angsty now that we know the Golden Grove (main) cast. At least I hope so ahha

Friendly reminder that Qiu in Step 2 strictly uses They/Them pronouns as well :]
I personally don't like opal but omg i love that she's kinda of realistic,i love angst so it would've been boring having a perfect parent or something like that,i like that she actually has flaws!

Really? Because i saw their Patreon and they said that the prologue has been wrapped up finally and they're starting with the moments! Idk though..
Yeah, but other step 2 moments had already been drafted just no codes yet. I think it was upto moment 8 that has been drafted. No final copy yet though. But still, i would be very disappointed if this is the end, drama cliffhanger for the MCs who didn't like their mom not attending the celebration

Hi, how’s it going! I have a question… I want to play everything again. So, does it change anything if I make my MC speak more harshly, like a “bad” or tough girl, kind of bratty and thinking she can handle everything on her own? Would that trigger any new scenarios?

I’d also like to try a shy MC who doesn’t talk much and is capable of crying when making friends. ... I wanted to know if that creates new dialogues, or if things don’t change much.

Both of those cause new dialogue/dialogue choices. As an example when I was playing as Nanuk, my snarky kid Tamarack mentioned that they didn't seem to like anything when Nanuk didn't seem to like her room or her dress in fancy fun. I'm pretty sure Nanuk wasn't my only OC who didn't like either, yet they were the only one I remember Tamarack having that line of dialogue for, and my only other snarky OC, Orfi may or may not have been considered snarky by the time of fancy fun(The options I chose confused the game and they were considered casual for some/much of step one, until it eventually decided he(Orfi is genderfluid) was snarky) and even if she was I probably went with more neutral opinions, since Orfi is supposed to not really care about much and usually just go along with things and when I was playing as my more shy MCs in walks if they buy something Tamarack offers to give the clerk their money for them and you can choose to accept or decline. She does the same if you buy something in mixed up, when Qiu's mom takes you, the boys, and Tamarack and Qiu to the bookstore, although you can't accept the offer because Qiu's mom goes with you and the boys. There are other examples, like there are a few dialogues that only appears if you're snarky, although most of the dialogue that snarky unlocks is also unlocked by being teasing to at least one of the love interests and if you cry after Everett hangs up on you after swearing at you, who you get if you go with Qiu and choose to call a random number while the boys are making prank calls in mixed up Baxter and maybe Darren too will call you sensitive. Oh and if your OC is very quiet(Just quiet doesn't count, it has to be very quiet) Qiu mentions it near the beginning of hide and seek when he's talking about Pran's(the forest boy/guy/pastel sweater boy) quietness. He mentions how you don't talk very much, instead of mentioning how Tamarck's grandpa is quiet. (I've played this game a lot, as you can probably tell)

I could see it working if one of the later moments addresses it. Like have mom miss something else important, and have it ask you how you handled the previous incident (yelled at her at home, stormed off to bed to sulk, went to bed resigned about it, etc), and that colors how you react to the current incident. Sort of telling the post-diner fallout in flashback to help set up the new crisis.

Though I do agree that it would be somewhat annoying for it to be brought up but then never addressed at all.

I wish there were side characters to romance during young adulthood instead of just Tamarack, but other than that this game is so wholesome.
You could always stay platonic and just assume you're romancing someone else off-camera.

That's how I played the previous game, more or less. I played through as a lesbian who had zero interest in Cove as a love interest. So we basically became friends, then really close friends, then basically like siblings. No matter how hard our parents were clearly trying to push us into a relationship, I was like "Just not into you like that fam. Bring on the girlies!" I even did the "sleeping in the same bed" part towards the end where my main character was like "It's totally okay, because it's not sexual in any way!" It just turns the game into a really touching story about friendship rather than romance.

Of course, I also completely ruined that because when the final act and DLC came around, I decided that it turned out that I was secretly bi the whole time and developed a crush on Baxter (because I feel like that storyline kind of plays out better as romance than just friendship). So then it just became a kind of melancholic story about how Cove got friend-zoned and cucked.

It doesn't really unlock any new scenarios per se. But the dialogue choices you make will flavor how future scenes play out, so the narration may describe how you react to certain things differently, or Qui and Tam will react to things differently, and so on. The overall story doesn't really change, but the lens you're seeing it through does change a bit.

I'd say it's definitely worth playing through more than once to see different variations on the story when you're playing your main character much differently.

Patreon Q&A: October 2025 (Patreon)
Hey, everyone! Here's this month's Q&A. I recorded it before I left on my trip. This was a long one, haha. The community here has been growing, likely because of all the Step 2 progress.

Claire will be sharing the Q&A in the month start post soon, excluding the questions people asked not to share and anything that'd be a spoiler.
