Pale Carnation - A Dark VN storytelling Masterclass.
Rating: - 5 / 5
Version played: Full release
Genre: Dark VN, corruption, mystery heavy story focus.
Pale Carnation is a game that should not be missed by anyone who happens and enjoys story-based visual novels featuring a dark, mature theme. It is not a fast fap game, it is literally a full-fledged visual novel that only has sex in it.
Writing & Story - 5/5
This writing is easily of top caliber in this site. Characters are real people who have their motives, secrets and weaknesses. It is a slow-burn story that is full of political intrigue, manipulation, and psychological tension.
The MC is not a stereotypical good guy, he is morally grey.
Side characters are not so shallow or one-dimensional.
The witty, clever dialogue is very crisp and not very filler.
Even in case you are one of those who actually reads and likes the plot, this makes it 5 stars alone.
Art & Presentation - 5/5
The painting is beautiful and uniform. The sprites, CGs and backgrounds of the character all belong to the high-end, decadent appearance.
Lovely forms, passionate features.
CG shots are elaborate and properly framed.
UI is not cluttered and it does not stand in the way.
It appears and plays like a professional VN, not an amateur Ren'py rudimentary attempt.
Adult Content - 5/5 (with a warning)
Erotica is of good quality, though it is also dark. It is not a vanilla romance game.
Expect themes like:
Manipulation
Power imbalance
Moral corruption
In case that is your thing, the scenes are violent and they fit well into the narrative. This is not likely to be your cup of tea in case you are just after light-hearted and wholesome material.
Atmosphere & Tone - 5/5
The game drives a nail in the atmosphere of decadence, rot, and grace simultaneously. This mood is supported by everything, music, writing, and images. It is as though reading a dark novel in the midst of a corrupt upper-class setup where every one is hiding something.
Replay Value - 4.5/5
There are:
Multiple routes and choices
Learners have different approaches towards relationships.
Sufficiently different to warrant more than a single playthrough.
It is not a sandbox but as it is a story-heavy VN, it has a good replay value.
