Personal kinks VS popular kinks in game

And this is where the question arises as to whether there needs to be some balance. How much of yourself should you give to the game and how much should you follow trumps like NTR.

If what the developer is doing is linking together a sequence of pornographic images and animations
and the players understand that
it probably doesn't matter

If what the developer is doing is a story with narrative which they want to stand on it's own
and the players understand that
probably best for the developer to write about things they are familiar with

Make the game you want to make, it is that simple. Do what you like and are comfortable with. It's noticeable when devs partner to a specific audience/tag, and more often than not comes off more cringe rather than erotic or interesting.

Making the game you want to make is the best option, writing content you are not comfortable with or have a poor understanding of will greatly reduce the quality of the writing. If you are curious about one or like it in games but not in reality (like NTR for most), then it is really up to how you feel. Research is key for the kinks you don't know a lot of. [Insert funny "For research purposes" meme reference]

Where I disagree with chainedpanda is that partnering to a specific audience will mostly result in cringey writing. My own game (which I will post here soon I hope), does catter to a rather niche category in the wider adult content community, but if as a dev/author/artist, you share this niche, it will make the content better. If they meant going for a kink you have no interest with, then the point of this paragraph is moot.

You do you buddy. However if you are interested in some more "fringe' personal fetishes like NTR or futa for example, I would say lean into it and make it clear the game has that stuff. Surprise NTR or dickgirls is rarely appreciated. Even if you give the option to disable it.
I think it's best to either go reasonably vanilla or full on degenerate. Being in-between will just give people boner-whiplash.

I come from the world of writing romance and erotica, and we have a saying over there. "Niches get riches." I wrote some futanari stuff and then cuckold/hotwife and made a very good living from it for a few years. I wasn't necessarily "into" either of those, but I could write them well and it was very lucrative for a good while.

The nice thing about hitting a niche and hitting it well is there are going to be people who are starving for content and willing to throw money at you. The trick is finding a sweet spot where you're in a niche that isn't so damn small that the starving people aren't enough to pay your bills.

That's assuming you're looking to do this for a living, and not just for fun. If you're just in it for fun then you do you and don't worry about what the market wants. If you're doing something you're passionate about it'll show and you might find a larger audience regardless.

Depends what your end goal is. Do you want to make your own project or so you want to cater to a niche/broad market? Niche kinks tend to have a smaller market but many games end up with a solid following, if only because there aren't many alternatives for them. Broad appeal with standard kinks opens yourself up to a wider audience but you run the risk of being just another clone of much more established games, and potential customers may not feel the need to pay into it when there's so many other options.

Personally I'm in the process of fleshing out two games. One is a passion project which I'm sure will likely not go over too well with the general market, even though it will contain no real controversial kinks. I'm just basing that assumption on the story itself as it's a much more "real life" plot than most games here. It will include sexual kinks that I personally like and that's it. Don't plan on catering to those who troll new release threads trying to implement their own preferences into it. The other game, while being very loosely based on an existing IP, will be much more unrealistic and, as such, be able to contain other kinks that I may not personally enjoy but will definitely appeal to the broader market.

My issue is trying to determine which one of those I want to really dive head first into and get onto the market...
