good lord. this somehow manages to be both a bad pokemon game and a bad porn game.
you'd think it'd be very difficult to make a truly bad pokemon game, given how simplistic the franchise is, but H Version wants to make it "hard." and by "hard," i mean the kind of unfair hard that casuals associate with Souls games.
the first battle is a perfect example of this: your starter pokemon can't out-damage your opponent's in the very first fight of the game because theirs has access to a priority move that always goes first. so, you're forced to either use healing items in battle (booooo, fight fair) or spam Double Team, which makes it less likely your foe lands a hit until you're confident that you can take out the opponent's 'mon without getting pressure washed to death.
note that, if you've never played competitive pokemon before, most events and services specifically disallow the use of Double Team because it makes for extremely boring matches and turns the game into a luckfest. if a game is actively encouraging me to cheese in order to survive, that is not "hard". that is unfair.
speaking of unfair, the starter pokemon is absolutely ridiculous once it's fully evolved. it has decent speed and great offensive stats; amazing defensive typing, weak to only ground and fire attacks; it has an incredibly powerful ability that buffs it whenever it KOs a 'mon; and its signature move gives a free defensive boost whenever it hits. if Nintendo released this thing, it'd be running all over the competitive circuit with very little in its way except a very fast Earthquake 'mon. i can't tell what the devs are going for when they hand me a 'mon this busted and then have a leveling curve that's as out of wack as theirs is.
now, i did bring up competitive play earlier. the reason for that is because H Version is absolutely inspired by it. at the very end of the first route, you fight a trainer with 5 'mons -- unheard of for this early in the game -- and they lead on a Spikes/Swords Dance/Baton Pass Skarmory. that Skarmory will lay Spikes to damage all of your pokemon as they enter the battlefield, spam Swords Dance to buff its attack stat into the ceiling, and pass that bonus on to another pokemon, who will proceed to sweep your team of Oddishes and Pinecos.
on top of that, you have no supereffective moves at that point in the game to deal with Skarmory's tankiness, so if you didn't grind your team to the level cap, you're just stuck until you do. in what universe do you expect the people who play your game to jerk off to want to grind that hard just to progress? this isn't even a gym battle or other boss fight, it's just some random kid on a bridge. what were they thinking?? just do away with the level cap, scale trainer levels to the player's party average, and steal the trainer AI rework from Complete FireRed Upgrade. it's that simple.
speaking of jerking off, hoo boy, is H Version stingy with it. the game is 95% a poorly executed romhack and 5% porn. plus, the porn that's there is just... okay. it's not animated, it's loosey-goosey with anatomy, and it's short. it's amateur hour. you shouldn't expect anything more, especially after your hoe rival OwOs in conversation.
it's disappointing, low expectations aside, because pokemon and hentai is a match made in heaven. the games themselves center around a theme of growing alongside a team of companions and learning more about their abilities and powers as they grow more affectionate towards you. imagine that but with a team that's also your harem.
to the devs -- come on, man. i don't want to watch half-assed VN cutscenes of my 'mons looking sad about things, i want to walk with them. feed them poffins off of my chest. play pokemon-amie but in a BDSM way. so many free ideas; none of them utilized.
i ultimately gave up on H Version after encountering an extremely annoying (but not technically gamebreaking) bug that screws up overworld ground textures after entering a building or a battle, which made it very difficult to progress without relaunching the game after every encounter. i probably would have given up on it soon enough even if the game wasn't kinda buggy.
anywho, if you want to manhandle your ham candle to this, all of the scenes are in the Pictures folder of the main game directory. if you want a genuinely challenging romhack with some love and care put into it, go play Unbound or Blaze Black/Volt White. don't play this.
