I've been trying to patch FFXIV for a god damn week now :| I got rural internet lol
Okay after playing through a bunch of game and then cheating to unlock all the scenes because I got bored (and normally prefer to play big games like this in their finished version and not piece meal), now I got 'pinions.
Movement is still very jank lol, but w/e not a big deal.
The writing is good and I like that each girl feels like they have a personality, of course I have my favorites and would love to see more content for them, right now I think each girl gets effectively 2 scenes at most, though I'm sure that is planned to be expanded upon.
As far as story/plot writing goes I feel a little lost as I play? Like I don't really get a big narrative thrust. I get that it's supposed to be mostly sandbox-y but I could tell that doing specific things would effectively put me in 'chapter 2' or w/e when more options would open up in town. But those things didn't really seem like they were narratively important, every quest felt like a side quest, like I was just killing time before I did whatever thing I was ~supposed~ to be doing.
I think this is because hot flat-demon lady was like 'okay so I own you now, I guess go fuck about and I'll come back and get you' which made me feel like I was just waiting for her to come back? When I think it's supposed to be more like 'okay you should establish a new life here'. IDK, maybe I missed some internal thoughts of the MC or w/e that would have clued me into what he felt about what he was doing, but I felt a bit ~off~ the whole time in a narrative sense.
Also I felt like I should walk around and re-talk to people after coming back to town to see if new options were available like the cute cat girl escort, but there weren't enough changes that it felt like it was really worth my time. This is probably going to be fixed later or something, by there being so many changes that you feel like you're always finding something. Or it could be fixed by a better fast travel system so backtracking felt like less of a time sink, idk. Just 2 pennies.
E: also let me fuck lizars in the butt kthx, kobold butt or snake butt accepted.

it always asks if you would like to turn on patreon content when you open the game, just hit no. if you go into settings (in game) after setting it to true you will see that cheats are enabled
Hm? There's no chapter 2 scene and all of Kadlea save for the government district are open to you, but that opens up in act 1.
There's an MSQ, progressing in it won't lock you out of any content, but a few quests naturally are attached to the MSQ...? The journal and quest logs are written in Redic's internal monologue.
Random crowd people won't have much to change, re-visit and contextual chats usually change with which quest you are doing. As for travelling, you can use the map to bounce around!

Well, if a character only joins after a certain major event in the main quest you don't have to code for any of what happened before that, only the sidequests that are still accessible after that event, which can be a low number of quests if there's a major world state change. I'm thinking of characters that join later that the rest of the crew in games. Yuffie from FF7 comes to mind.
That's my main criticism too. Being left alone a bit so you can get a lay of the land and gather your ragtag groups of companions is fine, but then eventually the main story has to take the stage. So the character writing is good but this better all just be Tutorial Town, or we're getting a Dragon Age 2. And no one wants to be Dragon Age 2.

Yeah, I considered this but, we honestly don't gate too much content beyond the MSQ in terms of side-content. FF7 had the advantage of only having the main cast talk, and super rarely. It was pretty much only Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, and Barret talking outside of the story beats that the characters were involved in. For instance, you only hear from Red XIII when Aeris is about to go White Woman on him while Hojo watched, then Cosmo Canyon... and that's about it lol. Has a few funny one liners like when they stuff him into a Soldier outfit which is fucking adorable and funny. Yuffie is the same thing, once she is done with Yutai she speaks once in a blue moon... mostly to vomit whenever she's on any vehicle haha.
Vincent I think speaks the least out of anyone outside his side-content. I feel like we would need to plug the character into the dialogue period or else people won't want to bring them as they wouldn't have enough tie in with dialogues or they would miss out on too much. If we do it, it'll be fully implemented.
Once upon a time, we wanted to add a Dryad character that would join post Act 2's crescendo! But even though we've pulled back from to stop too much scope/creep, it's something our programmer really wanted but we just had to pull back from it. Right now we would get so stretched thin adding a new character!

Garroth. Ngl, I was surprised seeing as "random" beggar ends up having character model, so I deduced he was important. So does his mini quest always ends up the same way, or have I messed up something and there are 2 ways (okay, more like 3 ways, because one includes failing on talking sense to him) on how it could go? Mostly asking this, cause it is not even mentioned on your walkthrough.
From the 7 characters on the bottom of the gallery (that have models and no NSFW content) who are you the most excited to work on? Alistra, Dee, Esther, Kimber (great work on a model btw), Lin, Goldra or Shaman?
Also it's more of a question to the whole team, so also to ArbuzBudesh and deck - who are your favourite major and secondary (maybe even tertiary if you want to include them) characters in this game?

Nah. Don't take what I said too seriously. I was just being cheeky. Focus on what's important first. You can always add things as DLC once you're done. But from a player's standpoint Iski does feel like a character that wants to join the party. I mean she's got literally nothing going on and keeps showing up in your room, and unlike the escorts or Dee she's got an actual DnD class. Not exactly written as a one-time encounter. Basic intuition tells you to expect her to join at any moment. Not surprised people are requesting. It's not just the kobold pussy.
Atleast u can play after that, because your PC is good for this. This is probably better scenario than being with a good internet, but ... w/o a PC to run what u downloaded lol.

Haha yeah I mostly was meme'ing, Mara has more content planned with the Whispering Brook after states, she also will help Redic out in the future as she becomes more involved with the regional politics. There is some very deep behind the scenes lore that'll happen too, and the player will only become aware of it and the attached quest if they are paying close attention to a few signs of something being up, with regards of Mara.
Scylla and Redic have very similar stories, but Scylla is younger of course (the youngest of the companions). I do like the idea you latched onto her as deserving the truth, as I view Redic as a mentor for her. She and Hiho have a huge impact on her future. Kimber, yeah, if you finish up the current MSQ stuff she's pretty much fucking delved and dreged out who Redic is from the events of Faltest onward. The Commodore is so prevalent, so powerful because people figured she was a jarhead chowderbrain. But in actuality, she was an extremely fucking paranoid stable genius who was backstabbed by someone she considered a close friend and even confidant. So she ends up making a spy network that has no official name and absolutely no one fucking knows who they are or what they know. It helped her manoeuvre around politics in Kaldea far more effectively than anyone would have thought, as she was brand new to politics and many thought she'd be easily taken advantage of. Gracer figured he could groom her into a loyal stooge and unify the Merchant Marine and Partisans... Asgher's father wasn't a particularly politically astute man. People figured like father like daughter
Garroth, I believe, was one Cheese wrote through and through. I didn't quite get through that I was uhhhh... fuck I can't remember what I was reading, but I've been reviewing more and more, I'll ask him when I get to that if I remember though!
Personally, I love working on Kimber, but I don't know if we will actually let Redic bed her. She is extremely paranoid and guarded, though, I plan to have Kimber and Redic have a mutual respect that evolves... it wouldn't be impossible to write and I think I could see a scenario where Kimber could invite Redic into her house, and even bed. But not sure if we have that planned. But there is more content in terms of the political struggle in Kaldea and you can side with her further in the future. Handing the fort over to Kaldea counts as benefitting Kimber and strengthening her position in the city btw, giving the fort over to Atlathka is neutral as she is able to spin that against her political rivals.

Lol yeah, we don't really have the DND classes yet, our characters all can be Leatherman Wave+'s for the most part with the exception of HIho. Or rather, we plan for them to be very versatile that way when we finish it up, with them excelling in certain fields and such. But yeah for sure with how much she pops up people are like "oh hey!" Would be cool to do after launch! We'll have to see how we feel about either moving on or making more content for Avarice after then. We might be burned out on Avarice immediately and want to move on to a new project.
Hum. Never thought about doing that until now... an interesting idea. I'll tennis ball some ideas about it with the team and see what they feel.

TIL Scylla is youngest companion. Thought she was more or less similar to Redic age, but now that I think it might be coming with every companion being different race. Also yeah, Scylla and Hiho are sweet together. Hiho sees the best in everyone even in the very reserved (at first) Scylla and is willing to give everyone a second chance - something that Scylla desperately needed. Ever since I saw their interactions in the tavern together I became fan of this duo. And then during her quest when Hiho got attacked and Scylla went on her solo mission ;_;
It's funny how when at first I didn't trust her, but was willing to let her be, only to later learn the truth, have her open a little and then she became my favourite character. And now whenever I go on a mission I have two teams:
- "the one that gets the shit done" - like the attack on castle consisting of Samara and Osh'To
- "good times all around and a lot of of informations" - with Scylla and Hiho.
... still went on the Whispering Brook with Hiho and Samara despite it for some reason.

Honestly I wouldn't be opposed if we couldn't bed Kimber. As You said She's extremely guarded due to her past and also She is extremely focused on politics. And she's goddamn efficient at it. If it weren't for the newest character we meet I don't think there would be someone as effective as her outside of the Lady Wolf. And even with the newest character I have my doubts, since they focus on the bigger picture, while completely disregarding all the details (like guards taking the bribes and farmers situation), unlike Kimber who seems to be controlling everything.
The only way I could see her even bedding Redic would be:
- getting new information from him this way/believing she would secure his loyalty this way (and even I doubt it would happen with the latter one)
- needing to "work off" some stress before/after something big happens
and it still would be 100% professional.
I knew that Nailah was behind the Athlatka situation! /jk
Jokes aside, I can't wait for more!
Oh, one more thing - I have found it strange that Redic was somewhat more content/peaceful with the undead merchant in the dungeon on the castle and more "on the edge"/averse in that other situation. Not that I blame him with the latter case due to the obvious, but still.
