Question about Patreon content guidelines

Well, looking at Patreon's rules and reading some of the threads in this forum I'm getting a little confused about what we can or cannot put in a game if we intend to have a Patreon account.... I might develop a game in the future so I'd like to be a bit clearer on that.

At first I understood that Patreon is quite strict when it comes to mainly two acts: Incest and Rape.....

So, one at a time
Incest
This is something I'm not interested in (maybe because I never had a sister and my mom was too old to an object of desire by the time I was old enough to get horny)....
and it's something I wouldn't put in my game anyways....
But still, it sounds like many popular games have it, and yet the devs are also on Patreon
How is that possible?

Rape (brainwashing, drugging force, whatev)
This I do sometimes like in game or porn (as a form of roleplay really).....
But again: are the rules really strict about this? It seems, again, that quite a few games feature it (in some shape or form).

Thinking of games I like, well, Harem Hotel doesn't have any of that, ok, but some Pinktea games arguably do.... (I suppose you could argue they don't really refuse but the girls are often in a situation where they don't really have a choice). The first version of Kingdom of Deception also had rape (later removed, but kinda present in some bad endings)

Aside from that....hmmm, threads seem to indicate that Roundscape Adorevia and Dreams of Desire, for example, feature plenty of that (I never played them so I wouldn't know)....

What am I missing here?
Is Patreon not good at actually enforcing those rules? Do they even try to?
Are there ways to get around that form of censorship?
Are those rules something I should really worry about if I ever develop my game?

Incest, rape (mind control etc) and beastiality are all banned on Patreon.

Sure some devs still have them, they are flying under the radar for now. Sooner or later they will be found.

Whether you want to add it or not is up to you but as long as you are aware that Patreon can and probably will take down your game at any minute and that's okay with you then add whatever you want.

Some devs get round it by fans making patches or not having Patreon as their main source. Others host certain games on other sites and Patreon friendly ones there to collect money that way.

For instance one dev has a game heavily based around incest being hosted on one site while his other game, a vanilla dating sim, is hosted on Patreon. Fans can still support the dev and get access to all their games while Patreon is non the wiser.

How you run your game is entirely on you but if you add what Patreon doesn't allow they more than likely will shut your page down until you either remove the banned content or yourself, whichever comes first.

If you plan on using patches to restore content DO NOT make them yourself and don't host them on Patreon. They don't take too kindly to devs trying to bypass their bullshit and pages have been taken down for it.

Basically you can't have anything that is illegal for you to do in real life sex-wise, murder etc is fine, but sexual crimes are not. You cannot have rape of any form; so no mind-control, no drugs, no sleep-rape and no forced rape, you cannot have sexual assault; so no groping, sleep-bjs or unwanted touching, you cannot have incest; including step incest, and you cannot have bestiality, then the only other rule is no scat/pee. Edit: I'm also pretty sure necrophilia isn't allowed but don't quote me on that one.

If you want to make a game with these things try Subscribestar which will allow you to monetise those things.

Thank you for the replies.....

I definitely do not plan to include incest (not my cup of tea and I don't really get people who are into it....to each their own etc but if I don't get the appeal of certain acts I wouldn't be portray them effectively) and even rape is not a major need (extreme stuff like torture, scat, bestiality and necrophilia were never considered so that's not an issue).
I guess I'm not into anything too extreme..... Still, if I ever make the game it will be in a post-apocalyptic techno-fantasy setting, so the occasional rape/mind control etc could have spiced things up a bit.

Nevertheless, thanks for the replies...

I have a question about this too....

I had a look at subscribestar.... game devs don't seem to do that well on it (and many seem to use it as a secondary site but they are also on Patreon)....
I was just wondering, why isn't subscribestar more popular with adult games creators? It seems to offer more freedom, which is good for hentai stuff, and seems very similar to Patreon....\Is it just because Patreon is better known?

It is very new, only been around for a few months whereas Patreon has been around for a long time.
That means a lot less people know about it and most of the devs that use it have a Patreon too so people may as well just donate there.
It is also not trusted by a lot of people who would be giving them their card details, whereas if you're worried about Patreon you can always use PayPal and not give them your card details directly.
Finally it's pretty niche, not that many games have the kind of content that gets them banned from Patreon, especially as the incest wave seems to be ebbing away.
I don't personally have a Subcribestar because I don't see the need, nothing I produce should get me banned from Patreon so I can keep everything in one place there (although I may make one as a backup)

Because 1) As you mentioned, Patreon is better known. 2) Subscribestar has higher fees than Patreon. 3) For those who want to do incest, you can avoid the problem if you just don't "mother" and "sister" to the characters and you put a few disclaimers here and there. And 4) Don't quote me on this but Subscribestar has a bad reputation for reasons that I won't discuss here but you can search "Subscribestar" in the forum and read all the threads created about it.

On a side note, I read that Pixiv is now working with Paypal so it may be an option in the future

I just finished helping on a re-write of a game that wasn't allowed due to an issue of non-consensual sex.

It didn't take much to make the game patreon compliant. The scenes didn't even have to be changed all that much.

All that needed to be done was give the girl a reason. It could be any number of things like - she needs money for her grandmother's new kidney, or she left home because she was being abused by her family. Whatever the reason, she's desperate for cash, and / or needs a place to stay, and she's willing to do anything. Thus she consents to what happens next. The MC still corrupts the innocent girl, getting her to do more and more. She's reluctant, but willing, and working towards her goal, happy that she found someone willing to help her.

For a mind control game ... The MC gets a magic potion to use on his co-worker cutie. The coworker had always liked the MC but he lacked confidence, and had never asked her out. So she finds out about his "magic potion" and plays along, pretending that she's completely under his control... she does everything he tells her to. Eventually she tells him the truth.
