For a while now, I've dreamed of creating games full-time. I knew it was possible to build rich RPGs and narrative-heavy experiences with a small team, but the timing was never quite right. It seems the universe has decided to give me a push.

Word is that AI will be replacing a significant number of us at my current job. Seeing the writing on the wall, I've decided to take control of my own story. Instead of waiting for an inevitable layoff, I'm choosing to invest in my own vision. It's time to build something new. VGS STUDIOS is my future.

between patreon getting greedier per year and the clusterfuck surrounding visa/mastercard, you make sure theres a secondary income or an alternate site.

- itch.io just fucked all of the nsfw creators with their rule change.
- NSFW creators in China got fucked because their government suddenly targeting them. a lot of them had to move oversea(?)

Thank you for your concern brothern, I have been homeless before and I don't fear homelessness, I fear hunger.
I don't have a backup plan because honestly, this was just announced to us over an email that we'd be 'restructuring'... you know what that means.

Happened to my mother last year. Her work pulled a bunch of them into a meeting and essentially told them they were fired by the end of the term. (She worked at a school). Luckily she'd already reached retirement age and had a bunch of pto saved up, so she told them to go fuck themselves and took two months off while being payed for it and retired right after.

And anyway, earning as much as in your current job, and so even more minimum wage, isn't enough to quit your job.

You've to take count of all the benefits that come from the job (outside of the US it mean health, unemployment and retirement funds), that you'll not benefit from anymore.
You also need to take into consideration the fact that indie adult game developers usually works for a period of 5 to 10 years at max, and coming back in the employment market with a years long void in your resume is far to be easy to do. You'll be out of touch with the evolution of your job, and you'll also be asked to explain this break, and "I was making porn games" is rarely a good thing from a recruiter point of view.
This mean that ideally, you should earn at least five time your current salary before you consider the possibility to live from this. Assumed that everything that exceed your current salary will be used to compensate the benefits you don't have anymore, and to build an annuity fund that will permit you to live until your death once you'll stop working as indie adult game developer.

Depends on your country? In my country, your benefits do not change. You can make an unemployment insurance. Besides that, you can never drop to 0 thanks to social welfare anyway. When it comes to retirement, you need to pay pension insurance as indie dev anyway, as a Game Dev you are considered an "Artist" and therefore you are obligated to pay for pension insurance. The same as you pay it with your usual employment. And first: Because you are an artist, the government pays half of your stuff for all the social insurance stuff same as you would work normally as an employee, Second: The amount you have to pay is based on your income so it is flexible.

Where does this come from? Why would one, if being a full time dev only work for 5 to 10 years at max? I have enough ideas for games lasting for 10 lifetimes needed development...and even if I don't want to work in the h-game section anymore, you probably would still aim for the same industry. As an VN dev, your writing and rendering skills can be benefited from, for me I would have 3d modelling and programming skills, not to mention other stuff like marketing knowledge, community interaction experience etc. It is never a wasted time what you did, and hell if you worked full time successfully, that is a skill by itself.
