For anybody having trouble with Steam VR not working, add -VR to steam launch options and it should work, did for me.

tbf it isnt "too stupid to make a game compatible with index"
they made a game that doesnt run off steams VR runtime
that means that automatically it isnt gonna be compatible with headsets that require that runtime which would only be the index a VR headset that is niche in comparison to openXR compatible headsets

Yeah but alot of the VR community uses vive and index and have to use steamVR so it limits who can play by a large amount

ironically its quite the opposite, the vast majority of vr owners use quest headsets

Bro wth almost 70% of people use quests. If you got issues with your vr headset just play via VD -- it emulates quest helmet into steamvr so you can play realm34. Actually there is ALVR that do same thing but not only with quest. Check it out.

i've managed to get the game to boot on the index by using virtual desktop and toggling on "Meta Plugin Compatibility" but can't get the index's controllers to appear yet. Pain.

Loved the game - especially all the little secrets and stuff. Though I wish there was more... Interactability with all the models. Anyhow, if it really is your first game - then you did a really good job, dev.
