Ren'py declared dead in 2025 due to AI slop

I'm very much joking with the title of course, but it feels like 70% of the Ren'Py games posted on this website now are just garbage tier AI slop. Quality games using AI art are few and far between to begin with, I can only think of a handful of cases where it works, but Ren'Py in particular got hit hard. The Latest Updates page at first glance seems to have plenty of games made in the engine at first glance, and then you take one look at the preview or tags and are instantly disappointed.

I would advocate for some kind of quality control, but that's not really F95's job, nor do I see a good way of doing it. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like there are far fewer consistently updated Ren'Py games these days compared to a few years ago, many got abandoned or are on life support due to developer malfeasance. And the numbers look the same at first glance, until you realize just how bad the AI flood is.

Sucks to suck.

tbh it wasn't much different back during the DAZ/Honey Select days, I remember I absolutely hated seeing a game I was interested in and then....3D still images all over. The truth is the shills went from DAZ/Honey Select now to AI, granted it sucks and it really turns everyone sour towards any AI generated games. Which I agree, most are pretty bad but hopefully some actual good devs come out of the works that can generated good AI content.

I'm not sure I understand. Renpy is simply a software framework for creating visual novel style games. It's not limited to that type, but it's best suited for that type. Renpy doesn't care whether you generated the images and text with AI or did it all by hand, so you contrast unrelated things.

As for quality control, I think you already have the best option that a community-generated content site can offer. There is a recommendations section where you can find thread whose authors collect games that best suit your taste. And if you don't find one, you can always start your own and people will quite voluntarily do the QA work for you if you describe in as much detail as possible the traitrs by which you determine whether this game is of sufficient quality and that one is not.

EDIT: Although of course it may happen that the majority of users do not share your views on what quality content is and on the use of AI. In that case, recommendations are unlikely to help you.

Yeah no, it's possible to just exclude AI cg games entirely, but there are the few and far between cases where it doesn't suck. That's the only reason I haven't done so already.

Then I blame you, not the site, not renpy, not the devs making AI games. There are few and far between sandboxes that don't suck (imo), but I still filter them out.

There's two points here.

1) If you had bothered to use search and read the other threads you would have realized your OP is pointless AND inaccurate.

2) You don't want to exclude the tag but complain there is a lot of games YOU consider "slop", that has been, is still and always will be the case whether people are using AI or not. There are a lot of threads complaining about too many "KK games" or "low effort daz garbage", so focusing on AI is pointless.

If you don't like it, filter it out, if you don't filter it out that's on you and becomes a you problem, there will always be some games people don't like because of the engine or the mechanics or the art style etc., imagine if everyone made a thread about those.
