Ren'Py Rogue-like: Evolution [v1.6h] [Oni]

You seem to be very focused on my money comment which I could care less about. All I was doing was expressing my dissatisfaction with the abysmally slow progress of this game. Not actually expecting anyone to pay because I wrote a half joking comment on a porn game forum. I thought that would be pretty obvious after I called myself a chad with a high IQ but I guess that was too advanced for you. No I don't know how much a programmer would quote you for part-time work, though I do know that Oni already commissions artists to work on the game. No, that's not what I'm "basically saying" thanks. What I definitely think is that coding in a new girl should not take an entire year. Do you seriously believe 2 girls over four years of work is something to be defended and I'm wondering why you think he's working on this part time? I wasn't aware of that. He's certainly making enough to live off of at his patreon's current amount. Anyway the art's not the problem, it's his lack of skill that is slowing progress. If he structured his code decently the work to add in a new girl would be mostly copy and paste but for some reason he writes it from scratch which will cause all sorts of unknown conflicts which then will take him even more time to sort out. There's obviously the character interactions and all that but implementing a basic version of each student should be really straightforward given you have the art assets ready. After you do that then you can start doing more advanced interactions. Sure I'll remind you, this game is based off the X-Men Evolution TV show which had a total of 70 characters including background and one off appearances. Of those 70, 26 were female, 10 of those could realistically be in the school and 2 of them are already done which leaves 8 girls. I think that's an achievable goal for four years of work.

By the way, I'm not implying Oni is lazy and I will never say that. He clearly works hard and is willing to spend the time but the way he is and has been working for the past four years is very inefficient which upsets my dick as it's desire for more content grows. I'd just like to correct you on the "adding a new girl" part: Rogue's code was poorly made (his words) and could not be copy/pasted to Kitty so he decided to rework it so he would be able to copy/paste it for future girls but he seemed to have struggled a bit with it in the beginning, which is why Kitty took so long. As for Emma, she won't have the same dating system than Rogue and Kitty (at least in the beginning) because she is a teacher, so this is why this update is taking a long time.
Now I don't know enough about Oni to either make valid critics or to defend him, but one thing is sure: he is rather slow.

It's not a joke if you keep trying to defend your points. Like why make an effort if you don't actually care? Your complaints still come off as ungrounded. 10 girls in 4 years? What are you expecting, the dialogue to say A, B, C, and giving a random stat increase for each choice and have simple placeholder images for everything? With what, him paying out of pocket since the start to hire someone experienced? I'm focusing on the money aspect because everything else you've said pretty much boils down to 'Oni is slower than I expected". There's no point in challenging that. I have no idea how what his living cost is and I'm not sure if 3k a month is sufficient (and that's before

, so I've no clue how much he actually gets). As far as I know, he's still making an income doing art for Hentai United and commissions (stated on his Hentai Foundry page), so there's a good chance he's not working on this full-time.

Do you by any chance know how to unlock the scene? I can't find Rogue_DateNight.RPY . I was able to hunt down Version 0.92, 0.94, and 0.966c. I tried console command and it accepts the "R_Usher=True" and "=10000" but I'm not getting the scene. I basically want to splice that into the newer version.

You have yo unpack the RPY and read the code. Since it wasn't really put in there I don't even know if the code will run. R_Usher wasn't a variable, it was the label of the subroutine that was called when you got caught.

See, this is bad. You don't want to duplication in code. Because if you want to change one thing you need to change it in all the 'pasted' places and chances are you will miss one place.

I'm sorry, but coding isn't like running or swimming where you get better by doing it more. Unless he reads books about design patterns etc. to increase his skill, he will stay the mediocre programmer he is now and he will keep doing copy/paste/adjust work to add extra girls at the same slow rate.

See, this is bad. You don't want to duplication in code. Because if you want to change one thing you need to change it in all the 'pasted' places and chances are you will miss one place.

I've never written anything in Renpy, but I'm assuming Oni didn't really do anything that could be scalable. Does Renpy come with a default Character class for you to extend or is that up to the developer? If it's the latter, it could be the reason why his code is so bad/slow.

, it looks like Renpy doesn't have those prebuilt. He has to have to knowledge of using good OOP to make sure his game can easily add new characters. Eg, have a base Character class that Student or Teacher inherits from. Character has the shared stuff like Lust, Love, Obed, etc. Storing dialog is sane formats like JSON or XML, rather than putting it in the script directly...

Idk, shit like that. I'm guessing he's doing everything with bad programming practices. Which, is fine for HIM. But the work will be much harder to change, and not very fun to work with. I commend him for doing that bad code + art and design + writing. It's hard to write bad code man, because when you change something everything goes to shit. Good code is easy to change and modify.

There really isn't so much of a "full" version. I just continue to add more features along the way. The next version will be in a week or so, and will include a bunch of new options, and the one after that will have even more.
