I mean, before the whole VN fiasco, Vel has been pretty good about keeping a public worklog, public release schedule, and being timely with updates. I wouldn't call him a grifter for that. He's had issue of getting bored easily, evident with how much game changed between versions, but he also made no real promises and even warned people against donating to him.

I don't think it helped that the guy made multiple changes to the basic gameplay that weren't popular. It started as very similar to Karryn's Prison, with timed attacks and a rock paper scissors system. Then it changed to a deck builder system which wasn't popular. Then to a pretty shitty visual novel system. All of this with minimal actual progression to game content. If I was supporting them from the first version, I'd find the card game system fine, but switching to the VN system would just be a no to me.
Thats how I felt as someone who used to support this Dev, the original gameplay was my favorite however I was ok with the deck builder as I am also a fan of strategic gameplay but as he changed the core gameplay over and over I found myself less enthusiastic and before I knew it I left.

I honestly dipped when I saw the deck building. Most RPGs that uses it tend to have a very hard time keeping battles balanced. Either a build will become too OP due to enemies not having mechanics to handle it... Or Enemies DO have mechanics that supposed to deal with it, but this creates a situation where only very specific builds that either mitigate OR bypasses it.

Yeah I think that contributed to the disappointment/backlash.
The first few months of this game were fantastic. Very timely monthly releases with meaningful new content. Hopes were high.

edit:
I forgot, he even had his own public trello project board with tasks, things planned etc. It was possible to see the progress even between releases.

Frankly if he had just stuck to the system he had going with Saria to begin with and done the shitty card system in another game it wouldn't be so bad.

The problem is that he was making Saria, releasing updates on it for almost a YEAR using the normal RPG mechanics, only to take a 3 month break from updates and come back with an update completely changing the fundamentals of the gameplay to an objectively worse system for how the game was designed.

If he'd designed much of the mechanics around the cards to begin with, it wouldn't be an issue. But the problem is that the game had like a billion fucking options as far as combat actions goes, so trying to compartmentalize it all into a card system was an impossible task.

Should've just stuck to what was pleasing people instead of trying to make something no one wanted, or else he'd still have a moderately successful career.

Also things are not helped by the fact that when people first started to give him constructive criticism over the changes being made to the game, instead of taking this feedback into account and righting the ship accordingly, he got incredibly defensive and outright hostile to people.

The only one who sunk his game was himself.

Do you remember the name of that game?
No, I had the game on my PC but when I changed OS I nuked it apparently, it was Tentacle something, sorry that is the only thing I remember, it was tentacle something 2 and it was sort of an rpg made with RPGmaker VX or MV don't know which one it was).

Honestly,

creators like this are why I say: Screw them!

Someone should just go and stea- borrow their Game and continue it on their own! (without making money with it tho! That would be illegal!)

Someone should do what the creator can not!

I agree with this. Actually creators like these are why I never support until a dev finishes a game, then I throw 60$ at them. I use the logic that I do not buy even full fledged games for over 40$, so giving 60$ once is far and above what I would give to full fledged devs anyway.

Only exception is for some games that I will buy out of spite to share. Usually ones where the crowd is so on the creators dick that they white knight him and 'protect' his game from leaking. Literally have a list for those.
