Others Script Writing Tools

After lurking around here for months, and writing/rewriting a story or two in my head, I think I've finally decided to attempt to put a VN together. I've been toying with models in Daz and trying to put together a cast of characters. Meanwhile I keep reworking the story in my head.

I keep coming up with ideas that I think will really work in my story, but my head doesn't seem to want to hold on to the details. Obviously, I need to start writing it down.

So, I opened up my copy of Notepad++ and started laying out pieces of the script. I love Notepad++. It's free and it does everything that I need a basic text editor to do. I also have a license for UltraEdit through my company but I haven't installed it on my laptop yet.

And now my question: Do you kids have any suggestions on software that can assist with the script writing process? I'm okay continuing to use Notepad++ or even UltraEdit (heck, I could even use Word or Google Docs), but I was curious if the more seasoned authors around here had any recommendations on tools to use for getting their story together.

I appreciate any advice and/or words of wisdom you might have to offer.

I have a somewhat organic approach whereby I get a scheme of ideas going in my head and then I write it all straight into Ren'py. But I guess it all depends how your mind works.

As you're using DAZ you may well find that your pre-conceived dialogue doesn't sound quite right against how your renders then come out.

Then you either spend hours redoing the rendering to fit your script, or you adjust the dialogue.

I often enjoy adjusting the dialogue rather than trying to force the renders. It's like my characters are telling me their story instead of the other way around, and it sometimes opens up ideas I would not otherwise have had.

So if you feel you need scripting tools or whatever then I have no idea. All I would say is give it a try without and you will at least discover whether you actually need anything more than what's already in your head.

Thanks for the input gang. I've been thinking about just doing the writing in Ren'py, and I might just start going that route. I'll take a look at some of the other suggestions, but I'll probably just keep using Notepad++ until I start writing the Ren'py code.

I find that I get distracted from the story elements when I start playing around with the coding, which is why I've been using Notepad++. I can just throw down the script and then copy paste into Ren'py once I start working on the code.

I'll experiment to find what works best for me.

I never thought about that. I look forward to seeing what happens with my story once I get the first batch of images completed.
