The pacing of this game is horrible. While it starts out interesting, the midgame around Day 12-40 has absolutely nothing happen whatsoever. The game takes place over an 80 day period, and it truly feels like the developer was stretching content as far as possible. The game could have been shortened to a 30 day period and it would have been significantly better.
To live in the big city as a foreigner you need a permit. Your will only last until Day 10, so your central focus is extending your permit and gaining access to the deep interior of the city where the Key of Egg is being sold. But rather than leave this open ended like an RPG should be, the game is written like a visual novel that holds your hand through every single event with scripted scenarios related to extended your permit. So rather than finding out how to do so on your own, everything is spoon-fed to you.
Serafina is a pretty boring character. It would honestly be difficult to name any distinct personality traits beyond wanderlust. A weak protagonist really kills the player's attachment to the story. And the hour in between every plot point makes this a real chore to endure.
Due to the 80 day countdown throughout the game, players are discouraged from goofing off or exploring at their leisure. You should basically come into the game planning to be pure or whorish because there is no time to goof off with both actions.
Rather than a free-roaming open-world adventure game, Key of Egg focuses on a completely randomized and auto-generated event system. Select "Forward" to advance. This consumes HP and Stamina. Every time you go forward you'll either find an enemy, an item, or a stat-changing event. For example, a poisonous flower. I hate RNG as a substitute for game design.
It feels so linear it may as well be a visual novel. You either prioritize level ups, or whoring yourself. Being a whore involves raising lewdness and charm. Since these two methods of progression are completely separate and you're on a timer, you're basically forced to choose one way or the other.
There is no cooldown timer to being grabbed during battle, so you may lose your turn three times in a row due to poor design. Being groped raises your chance of orgasm and this carries over between battles. This means, you might orgasm at the start of a battle since arousal never cools down. And an orgasm means you're effectively dead, which is incredibly infuriating.
Just as explorations are 100% RNG, so too are battles. More than once I got 1-shot by an enemy I'd beaten thousands of times before. Usually because agility means nothing and enemies occasionally speed-blitz you even when you're a high level.
Outside of combat, the core game design is weak as well. Going out exploring the world will earn you less money and experience than simply fighting the same arena contestant 20 times. And the arena isn't even fun because of how stupid the battles are. Like the mage, you have to guard his attacks 10 times in a row in order to defeat him. That's not creative battling, that's just repetitive!
There are no character sprites or free roam mechanics, the entire game is played via menus. Feel free to use your mouse or the standard arrow keys to navigate menus. Only one standing artwork is ever displayed at a time, and varied expressions are minimal. Some CGs like the leg spread image are reused upwards of 5 times. Due to the lack of character sprites and free-roam mechanics, the sex scenes and background images are the only aspects of the game with any individuality, and they're a mixed bag.
Players determine whether or not Serafina is a virgin and how corrupted she becomes. Playing pure is very boring, and its clear the developer intends for you to prostitute yourself and become a whore.
Sex is usually missionary and cowgirl. Erotic dialogue is generally very limited and usually focuses on explaining what's happening, "she opens her legs", rather than meaningful dialogue to enhance the scenes.
Most sex scenes felt like a step along the road, rather than the culmination of tangible buildup. Like, you literally get drunk and wake up with a dick inside you. Rather than establish arousal that leads into sex, the scenes in this game usually felt like things that just happened. Especially because of the numerous defeat-sex scenarios.
CONCLUSION
I know the Kagura shills are out in force as always, but I stand firm in saying this game is overrated as heck. Even if you ignore all the flaws I named above, the game is simply, boring. Without a strong story or interesting gameplay mechanics, all you have left is the art. And only a handful of the scenes are actually hot, while the rest are abrupt and verbose; the two worst things a sex scene can be. I want buildup and natural dialogue!
I do not recommend this game at all.
