VN - Ren'Py - Sinful Summer: A Tale of Forbidden Love [Ch. 2.1] [Ruykiru]

(((This review is only my opinion about the journey while palying this game, I have very unique views that most of the people wont have, So this review is pretty much for myself. I think the good points still apply. As for the bad points I mention, those can be subjective, they depend on personal tolerance and expectations from each person. If you are lucky and you are not like me, this is a very in the high tier of all the stories of this site. If you are like me, you will aknowledge the parts that are awesome, and also the parts that are not. I rate the actual content of what I played, not the future or what I believe it will become. That will come later when it is released and re-reviewed)))

But bein so picky is still 4/10, and I never got so lucky durinf my academic years, cause when a teacher was picky about my works, he would rate me 2/10 or 1. Take it into account, and play it, a normal person I dont think could have many complaints.

The story in this one is very well told, very very, that whould be out of the way,a dn if the game/story kept its higher quality threshold at all times, this would be massive masterpiece.

But this guy is way too retarded, and the girl in some plot convenient moments also gets retarded and inconsistent in her behavior without a decent explaantion as to why. There there are moments that dont have payoff, like the over under bed scene, and it was done in a very retarded and tropy way. The usual thing where someone comes inside a room, touches an adult and the adult has very poor sight, no sense of smell at all, and very poor hearing.
I mean, I pretty much can tell when my neighbour is leaving the house if I ahve the windows open, cause there is a thing called perfume that has a very strong propagation. I hate when something well written falls into this shitty stuff, and i ahte it more when it doesnt pay off.
A lot of moments that dont have much logic, clearly constrained by the plot, and a lot of stretching in this drama.
At some point after certain scene the story pushes the breaks, the writing quality falls massively, the drama becomes repetitive cause the characters also have always the same strength in their reactions, it becomes flat and repetitive.
And the end of CH5 is another thing without logic that also fell flat, where you clearly see the design of someone carefully guiding the decisions of the characters and their actions, and not the actual behavior of human beings acting according to the rules previously established and the context.

Cause 2 people attracted to each other, with pent up emotions, and drunk, I asure you that they won't take turns to perform stuff to each other and be done with it, but a developer in early stages of a project will sure limit them to that, that being the tropy sex milestone book.
Once again, the creator of this novel, made a scene focused around wine and used it as a tool to make them open up under the stars and all that, but only to open up, the wine only affects what the writer wanted. But doing that fucked up the payoff, there is not another chance, so the story has been ruined.

And this thing really stands out, cause when the writer was in the arly stages of the story is clear that he pays attention to many details, I dont believe that he failed with the logic of something so simple, and that is when my suspension of disbelief couldnt take it anymore.

TLDR
Absolute masterpiece of writing, when the writer wanted it to be that way.
Masterpiece of visual storytelling, the same case as the above.
Absolute trash of Mc who is constantly rejecting every single thing, making it very hard for the reader to relate to him.
MC is abusive many times and passive aggresive, he even dares to throw tantrums, when it is the girl who is clearly being phisically and emotionally hurt.

Anyway, the plot doesn't move forward after the big scene, it gets back to what it was before, so instead of having a scene that could move the plot forward, we got an oasis of a scene that didnt change the characters at all, and in the end it became a fan service scene. After that al the scenes that we previsouly had of them exploring feelings and stealing glances at each other, are swapped by just fanservice shots, so there will be still panty shots and perky tits shots (cause of course every 15 20 30 and 40 year old have perky tits), butt shots and all
It pains me seeing the wasted potential, but the story has beein the exact same since CH1.2 I think, with only scenes that in the moment would make you think they were moving thigns forward but turned out to be just fanservice, cause one of the characters is completely dismissing their existence,a nd continues to being an asshole and shouting at the other, and it has been the same since that bathroom "incident", that character hasnt moved an inch, only to get his dick sucked, to later continue with his attitude. I dont know how can I root for this mf and enjoy this story really.
What I am sure is if that attitude and behavior are considered "love" it should definitely be forbidden.

If the dev tells me that he wanted to write a manipulative, hipocryte and abusive psychopath, I will eat my words and give this game 5 stars, But so far I think that he did it unintentionally

As a recomendation, you can play untill the bathroom incident, and that will leave you wanting more, but with a good feeling, an almost masterpiece feeling. If you continue playing, I can not guarantee your satisfaction. Personally I will wait until it is completed, and hope for the best. The dev is way more cool than I am, im horrible, so I wish him luck and inspiration


Sorry, it is what it is, and that is how I think

This game have been a breath of fresh air in a genre oversatured with low-quality shovelware. The dev was able to take a generic yet inherently interesting premise and transform it into a captivating and equally entertaining storyline. This is not another cheap, meaningless incest smut piece but a very well-crafted love story centered around
family drama and taboo. Character development was handled spectacularly, respecting the necessary time to establish the characters' personalities in depth but without prolonging it to an unnecesary length. The chemistry between the three characters is enthralling, especially the developing intimate relationship between Helga and Lyna.

With its focus on narrativity and plot continuity over non-stop or out of place sex scenes, the game have a pretty unique tone compared to other exponents of the same genre and is a very enjoyable experience overall. I recommend it without a second thought.

A cool incest game with an actual slow burn/buildup and not the usual lazy "Let's do Yoga!" -> immediate fuck, that many shovelware games do.
While not perfect, It actually has the potential to become a complete game.

Some Pros:

-The cast is not a bloated mess full of forgettable characters
-Good animations

Some Cons:
-MCs can be kind of too "extreme" (girl too pushy, boy too wimpy)
-Kinetic format (I like choices)
-While the main relationship is vanilla (which I like), threesomes and GxG scenes are gonna be unavoidable due to the Kinetic format
-Main female MC is fully shaven while main male MC is not. I'd prefer if she wasn't.

In conclusion, this is a good game with a believable scope and a clear finish line. Something that is quite rare on this website full of abandoned games. Will keep it on my Watched list for sure.

Reviewing Ch. 2.1

Short Version: This game is another uninspired cash-cow, but without any real bait aside the incest. If it's your first VN ever, i may recommend it, but only if i not-so-secretly hate you. Avoid it: The characters are ugly, their personalities are just boring, the plot is a cheap copy of every incest-story ever and yet the biggest flaw of the game is how the narration describes situations and characters, in a way that doesn't match what we (players) see.

Pros

- The premise, (if it was true), announces a great game already.
- How the characters look in the family photo.

Cons
- Despite how pleasant was reading the overview, i can tell that it's pretty much where ALL the dev's effort went, but not because what it's written in the overview doesn't happen, it actually does, but the quality of the writing sinks down the moment you start the game. The overview is a little masterpiece, compared to the actual writing in the game.
- I personally loved the screenshot of the family photo, the characters look so alive, so natural, actually looking good...and then i started the game where characters look like they're struggling with heavy drugs and losing that battle every day. I can't tell if it's the lighting or anything else, but i can assure you, the sister is the most ruined character of the group. In the family photo she looks pretty amazing(despite the use of low-level HS2), but in the game...just nope(but i'll explain soon).
- The writing in-game doesn't match what i see, for example during the first day, we get a lengthy description of the sister while she is leaving the pool, the narrator describes a small goddess or an adorable girl, but what i see...doesn't match, i see a little gremlin who suffers from anorexia, with her tits that can be used as ramps for skateboarding(or ski-jumping) considering how they curve upwards. Her face is so bad, and she looks even worse when she makes facial expressions. Her mom at least looks human.
- "Demoness wrote a long review about how bad Sinful Summer currently is, to the point that the dev couldn't do anything but fall on his/her knees and cry contemplating begging her to save this game" <- This is an example of what happens in the game: So much narration about indirect dialogues, like 80% of the time, basically "skipping" dialogues or moments of reflections that may have been a good idea to actually flesh out, the narrator is also very biased apparently, and not very neutral but it's not one of the characters narrating, otherwise they would speak in first person not in third and they wouldn't be able to read minds or talk about what a character is feeling, and this issue is what i tried to convey with my "Narrator tells what Demoness is doing and how the dev reacts to it"-joke: an omnipresent/omniscient narrator that gives biased opinions.
- Nitpicky one: The space between the nose and the upper lip of the character, is absurdly big, it's like their mouths are slowly falling off.
- The dynamic between the sister and MC is just weird, she is too pushy, and he is too restrained(for a good reason), it wouldn't be a problem if the sister backed it up at least, or went with it with some consistency, like how in Day One(i count them arriving at the mansion as Day Zero) she confesses that she likes being looked at by MC and wants more of it but in Day Two she grinds on MC, but runs away the second she feels his boner...can be embarassing, YES totally, but isn't she the one who initiates this whole thing? Where is the courage from Day One? Is my belief that both characters should be more balanced(i mean at the beginning), but so far MC is the only rational one, after all we're talking about incest, and not cousin-incest(in some nations is accepted, cousins can even get married, or get away with it because the family is so big that you've a distant relatives), but bro/sis incest, which is considered immoral and disgusting in most of the world even when legal.
- Lack of a dialogue box, meaning that during some scenes, the narration/text is barely readable, and other times is just unreadable, due to the brightness of the scenes.
- I changed MC's name, played for a while, stop playing, next day, i load my latest save, MC's name changed to the default one, no idea what happened.

Conclusion:
This game seems incredibly liked, so many reviews one after the others, with such a great ratio...only ONE negative review before i wrote this one. Talking about the game, i like the premise, the struggle of a family dealing with their own forbidden feelings for each other, it's a thing i love, the problem is the execution, and how often this kind of plot has been made. The things i recommend to focus are the graphic (seriously, Lyna is described like a gift from heaven, but she isn't and her personality only makes her worse) and to improve the writing style(adding a dialogue box that can be darken would save half of this game). MC is pathetic as a man, but understandable as a brother. Everything looks ugly or mediocre at best.

- in a lot of conversations between MC's, Erik go into panic mode
- unnecessary drama caused by some trivial things, literally situations like taking shirt off or simple kiss on the cheek

This would be a decent avn, but it's hard to enjoy, if you are forced to play something like "this". 2 stars from me - mainly because of Erik

TL;DR: Just finished the current release version of Sinful Summer: A Tale of Forbidden Love. Really good stuff! As far as kinetic novels I've seen on here it is certainly a cut above. The music and sounds are great, and the visuals mostly fantastic!

The Good: Incest! I'm obviously biased here since it is a favourite tag, but this game does incest really, really well! The taboo actually matters. The story is also good, and so are the character personalities.

The Average: It is a kinetic novel with multiple protagonists. It divides attention and development of characters, but you get a more balanced perspective of all character's current mental state. Good, but not for everyone

The Bad: The male protagonist, Erik, deals with the taboo in a rather venomous way. I understand his conflict, but sometimes he is too resistant to the point of harmful.

Thorough Review:

Story: Great!
Brother and sister reunite at their island retreat for the summer holiday and will soon be joined by their recently-divorced mother. Brother and sister are twins and have had romantic tensions between them since early days, and that is now turning sexual as they are adults. The mother, feeling alone since the divorce, is also looking for validation and intimacy, but where will she seek it out?

Characters: Great!
The characters are beautiful, and they have great personalities and internal conflicts that they need to resolve. The brother a sister are convincing portrayals, and the MILF's arrival was super great! I love the pampering mommy vibes, and I absolutely love the sexual tension between the mom and the sister! Mommy and Daughter rivalry dynamics are heavily under-explored in 'cesty novels and games!

Gameplay: Competent
It's a kinetic visual novel. You just click to progress. There are, however, some rather cute music videos to watch during playtime. There is also a gallery, which I greatly appreciate.

Visuals: Great!
The characters and environments are for the most part amazing at setting the scene. Some commonly used assets will be found here, but that's to be expected from VNs these days. It like how the dev made the most of them, though. There are also some really gratuitous camera angles being used, which I also appreciate!

Summary: Great!
I love these 'cesty tension dramas, and I feel most games with 'cesty elements try to leap past the taboos as soon as possible 'to get to the good stuff', but forgetting that the journey to get there is also really important. In that regard I feel that Sinful Summer nails the narrative and draw of the taboo, but I really struggle with just how venomous the brother can get in his resistance of his feelings and desires - though I've mostly myself to blame since I changed his name to my own making the difference in our personalities add friction. The current release chapter ends on a high and exciting note, so consider me roped in for the long-haul.

Wishlist:
> Helga and Lyna kissing! A lot!
> More hand-holding, head-patting and hugging!
> More mom and daughter rivalry (but in the cute way it is happening now)
> More of Erik being a good boy.

An excellent game which without a doubt was the best incest VN/Game I've used ever I think.
The buildup is intense and long so it's not a quick fap game which I initially thought as most incest games are.
I didn't read the whole description of the game either, which was both good and bad, because it spoils much of the experience.

The characters are great both in their presentation and 3d model.
The story is one of the best I've read, I even had to re-read some parts to be sure I got every bit of it in place. I studied the scenes very carefully and concluded that "The Swedish interior design gadgets from..." was a very popular book in the house hold!
The music is great and should NOT be turned off, because if you do you miss out!
I also liked that yet again this game surprised me of who initiated the sexual tension

I had my doubts about this game, first off because of the HS engine but the developer/designer of this game tried their damnedest not having them look Japanese and I think they did a good job.
I also kind of expected as I described above that it would be a "OMG incest, lets fuck my sister/mother and they all accept it!" game as about all others, but it wasn't.

I hope the consistency and buildup remain and the VN/Game doesn't turn out for all of them fucking like rabbits, i.e. become just like most other incest games.
The grammar at some points were flawed but otherwise it was a great experience!

This game is amazing if you want a slow romance incest. The buildup is really good and makes the wait worth so far. Chapter 2 will definitely be more spicy (according to dev). Can't wait to see what happens next.

This is shaping up to be one of the greatest incest visual novels of all time. I can't believe the quality on offer here. The pacing is fantastic. Its focus is solely on incestuous love and lust and the struggle with morality that brings.

This kinetic novel truly look refreshing at the topic of incest. Doubts, fears, denials and characters' attempt to understand their feelings. While this may sound "dreadful", this is absolutely not a gloomy story!

I won't hide the fact that I was very cautious at first because it's a kinetic novel, in addition with multiple protagonists. In such combination developer really has to give his best because readers jump on the railtracks and they can't change the route, at most choose which station they will reach. Of course, sometimes the view outside the window is different from what you pictured, but this journey is incredibly enjoyable and I'm almost sure I'll make it to the very last station.

Graphics, sounds and music in this case are incredibly important elements that build whole picture of the story. I love how detailed the developer approached this aspect. It's really nice and rare to experience the work of a passionate and dedicated developer who is confident in the story he wants to tell.

Is it a perfect story/game? Of course not, such a game doesn't exist and will never be made. If you're NOT looking for another power incest harem fantasy, if you're NOT afraid of female character who is more than a paper figure blending into the background, you should try this game.

For me, it's currently 5 stars. Although I think the real test for the story will come only now that the mom has appeared on the stage. I'm extremely curious about her perspective.

This kinetic novel is well worth a visit. It is extremely well-written with little to no errata. This developer really knows their stuff. The sister is cute, sexy and adorable; the mother, hot and sexy. The developer uses a unique rendering style that jumps out at you. All-in-all a really fun ride and I'm eagerly looking forward to further chapters.

This game has a well-written story that takes its time and visually it also looks beautiful. The game is still in its early stages, but the developer is updating the game very quickly.
With all the good stuff, it even has songs that were produced especially for this game.

I think this game should get more attention.

An epic tale of incestuous lust. The game features a story which slowly discovers the lust between siblings (and more to come!) which leads them down a slippery slope of forbidden love! The pacing is just right, its creative and engaging and you sort of feel the tangible blurred line between right and wrong. The teasing and eavesdropping makes it all more seductive!

Its a beautiful rendered game with a lot of epic detail focus. Its tightly following a few characters so the story is quite consistent and realistic sort-of.
Looking forward to the future with this one!

Updated Review for Ch. 1.5

While there are many incest-tagged games available to play, it's actually kind of a rarity to have one that is solely focused on being an incest game. That is exactly what Sinful Summer is doing. It's very up front about it, and is something I appreciate about it. If you're not into incest there's really nothing else for you here, because the game isn't trying to do anything but explore the blooming incestuous relationship of two twins (with the mother eventually being added to the mix).

After a year of separation, twin brother and sister are reunited in an environment where their repressed feelings for each other begin to unleash in full. The game takes a relatively heavy third person approach, where you get just as many lines from a narrator as you do the characters themselves. What's also rather different is that while yes it's a kinetic novel, you're still not seeing everything from the perspective of the male protagonist. The game is about the family as a whole, not just the brother if that makes sense. There's just as much focus on the sister's perspective as there is the brother's. The mom has yet to truly appear in the game, but I imagine it will be the same with her as well.

It's a pretty fast-paced plot in that it moves through the days fairly quickly by use of the narrator. I wouldn't say it feels unnatural, but I will say I think the game would have benefited from slowing down and letting some scenes actually play out instead of getting "the twins did this event together and got even closer because of it." I don't quite feel like both their bond and personalities themselves were characterized enough for me before it starts moving into the lewd boundary pushing. The game tells you many times how close they are, but as a player I wanted to witness more of it first hand. Further because of this, the sappy and emotional moments don't always land like they could have.

Edit: In my original review I mentioned here that a good chunk of the writing was rather hit or miss for me. My main problem was how the first real conflict/drama was playing out essentially. While the teasing sister was sort of ready from the get go, the brother was the one having the "I CAN'T THINK ABOUT MY SISTER THIS WAY!!!" dilemma. Now while I still maintain the opinion of disliking that trope for a multitude of reasons (see my thread comments), this latest update (1.5) has seen that drama resolved. Despite my issues with it, it was a satisfying ending seeing both parties start to give in to their long-standing desires and I'm glad it wasn't something super drawn out.

Now one area where the game actually does stand out a fair bit is during its lewd moments (which there are many of). There's a lot of hot angles, good sound effects, tantalizing teasing, and overall is just an aspect that feels like it has a lot of thought and effort going into. It's almost stylistically unique among AVNs I've played, in that it feels like the dev has really made it their own and ran with it successfully. I also want to mention that I do really like the character models as well. The girls look good in a more realistic sort of way with details like skin imperfections and such.

While I wouldn't say it's the best game I've ever checked out, I actually do think it's one of the better pure incest games I've come across. There's a lot I've sort of forgiven in light of this just doing what it sets out to do, and not bullshitting you with anything extra. I most likely will return to this down the line.

Being a KN there's no Gameplay, but, the Hud in what concerns the font and colors of it, is quite legible and pleasant. It shows that some care was put into it.

<------- Graphics ------->

This is, maybe, one of the less stellar points of this KN. Not because the creator hasn't made an effort, but because it is limited by the engine in use.

In spite of it, the creator was able to deliver a product that isn't ugly, there's a lot of attention to detail, with transparencies and other tricks, that attempt to go beyond the engine limitations.

<------- Animations ------->

One of the problems of this engine is the somewhat limited range of animations. Don't get me wrong, they work, they do their job. There's nothing particularly bad in this, except that anyone that has played other game(s) created in this engine, they have seen them many times.

In what concerns this title, they are sufficient to enhance the story.

<------- Photography ------->

Here is where the Creator work shines trough.

The plans, from extreme close-ups to the very wide shots, show the care with which this was created.

The underwater scenes are very good. The color filters used are stupendous. The sunsets really feel special. The night shots aren't dark but convey the feeling of night.

I felt the need to pause and keep looking at some of the scenes to appreciate the work done on them, either in the engine or in Post.

Again, it is here that the care with which this was done really shines, a really good job.

<------- Writing ------->

Let's get this out of the way, the writing shows sophistication and maturity, not only of the creator, but of their writing skills.

It doesn't matter if they are just starting or if this is their 100th story, they are quite comfortable writing, they have a large vocabulary and a strong domain of the sentences. This is NOT an amateur job.

What this is is a very well written with a sense for the dramatic, for the effect, for the flair. The writing is not pompous or elaborate to the point of obscurity, but a quite interesting mix of simplicity and sophistication that makes this a extremely pleasant experience as a reader. The vocabulary is extensive and textured, creating by itself a sense of comfort and homeliness.

The author is quite comfortable in the process and it shows beautifully.

Now, this is a Kinetic Novel (and I hope it stays that way) so, it lives and dies by the story.

In this still incipient, still small, plot, we can see the roots of the greater drama and greater plot that it promises.

If there's anything I would ask for a reduction of, would be of the foreshadowing and futuring that the narration seems dedicated too.

Let's steep into the Theme. This has been done and done and done, better, worse, different, etc... too many times, but, also, not enough times. The incest angle, especially with twins and eventually the mother, is one of the tamer ones. Mostly because it isn't as disturbing or carries a sense of danger as does the ones involving fathers.

In a quite novel and pleasant surprise, we see the female protagonist being the major actor, not even the mother, but the sister. I have to say, that this right here, is a decidedly winning point for me. I do hope that this is a constant even if the male protagonist gains some (very needed) confidence. The best part of this, is that it isn't made in a domineering or aggressive way, but, a slow and gentle loving that is pushing the barriers aside without damage and without force. I have to say, I am in love with this girl.

The slow, but inexorable, pace with which the certain act will come, may confuse some of the readers, used to a male protagonist that takes control and charges in. Truly, not what is happening here.

I would go as far as dropping the brother as a protagonist at this point, this is clearly a story for, and by, the sister. I do appreciate the attempt to give us His POV, but, it is indeed her story. She drives it, she owns it and it is hers.

The brother is quite an interesting character, the one with more growth and transformation potential (and sorely needs it too) his gentleness and care, along with the powerful emotions he's being faced with, and let's not forget, he's 18, inexperienced and HORNY. Being placed with a major seducer like his sister, that clearly and without doubt is interested in him, and as been for years, is causing him to rip out of all his barriers and protections he developed while growing. The process IS painful, IS slow, but it is also irrevocable. I do hope he retains his gentleness and dependability and not turns into an asshole.

All in all, a story that in a small time, as managed to capture my imagination and my feelings.

I will say that this has the potential to become one GREAT KN, maybe one the best of this theme. Maybe not in the graphics and sex scenes (it remains to be seen), but in the story and dramatic developments.

The attention to detail that permeates the whole project, if maintained, can make it something to point out as an example. It is THAT good.

The characters are growing, are evolving, are becoming something. Even at this incipient start it is already clear that this will lead to great things.

I truly RECOMMEND it to anyone interested in the Theme, with the caveat that this isn't a FAST one, get ready to be teased mercilessly.

Music has been picked appropriately. Gentle, sweet, guiding, nicely following the scenes.

Setting is good, the narrative for the start of the story works well.
Makes for a very sweet intro into a journey of discovery between the twins.

I like the early interactions between these siblings.
Feels natural as far as that's possibly with this topic.

Natural in the sense that there is some guilt involved concerning the inner desires.
Trepidation about the possibility of damaging their relationship by stepping outside the comfortable and safe boundaries.
Which is a very human consideration given their history and love for each other.

Build up's nice. We all have our own wishes for how fast it should go (I'd go even slower for max pay off), but I felt the current pace is quite pleasant.

Renders are good! You incorporate some very unique perspectives which add to the fresh feeling of this game. I'd say most were a hit but a few, I feel, could be improved upon.

Later on the tension between the two is striking, tangible, well presented in that regard.

Great effort so far, keep it up!

As a fan of brother sister love stories and *nc*st stories in general, I can recommend this. While the first release is quite short, it is a good setup for what's to come in the future. Looking forward to more of this one.
