Slow Burn or Quick Fap (This Is Not a Comparison of Genres)

I’m one of the many people who enjoy adult games and want to develop their own. Since I’m a beginner in most aspects, I won’t be discussing graphics or mechanics. The topic I want your opinion on is the story.

First, I have to say this: My goal is to make money. Of course, I’m aware that this is a difficult thing to achieve. Out of the hundreds, even thousands of game developers, maybe only 5% make anything on platforms like Patreon. Making enough money to quit your day job and focus entirely on game development is even harder. However, I live in a country with a terrible economy and even an extra $100 would put me in a good position. That’s why I don’t think my goal is entirely impossible. (Or am I wrong?)

Anyway, I’m sharing this information because I’m wondering what kind of story would have a higher chance of making money.
I’ve had a story I’ve been working on for many years. Back when I was in high school, I showed the draft to some of my friends and teachers, and they gave me very positive feedback. Unfortunately, I was never able to publish it as a book because where I live, if you want your book to get published, you either have to be rich or be a popular influencer with thousands of followers.

Back to my point: I truly believe my story is good. It’s about a university student dealing with issues that go as far as dissociative identity disorder. I could increase the number of female characters and add sexual content, turning it into an adult game. Of course, this would lower the quality of the story, but I’ve always believed that it’s better to write a good story and add sex to it rather than writing purely for sex.
Long story short, I could turn this serious story I’ve been working on for so long into a game. But how much would people actually like it? It would be a slow burn type of game, and it would take time for things to fall into place. I believe this is a risky choice when it comes to keeping people’s interest.

On the other hand, I could go for a different concept. From what I’ve observed, NTR is one of the most popular genres. I enjoy it myself and have played many games in this category. I’ve seen many people support a game just because it has NTR, regardless of its quality. Of course, I won’t name any, but I’ve seen extremely low-quality games make hundreds, even thousands of dollars just because they contained NTR. People supported these games because it was what they wanted to see. It’s like a guy who keeps watching the same kind of porn—quality doesn’t matter, they just need more NTR.

Just to capture this audience, I could abandon the story I’ve been working on for years and create a game in this genre. As I said before, I’ve played a lot of NTR games, so I have a decent understanding of how things work. And as someone who loved telling stories even before I could read or write—drawing pictures to tell tales—I could easily write something that fits the genre. Honestly, I could sit in this chair right now and write ten different NTR game scenarios.

But should I?

At the very least, am I wrong in thinking that most NTR games with average quality still receive significant financial support?
The reason I’m writing this post is to hear your thoughts on these topics. If you were in my position, which path would you choose?
Would you go with the highly intelligent, well-crafted story you’ve been working on for years? ( At least that's what I think. ) Or would you develop a game in a genre with an already established, massive audience?

Of course, both choices have risks. For example, if I go with the first option, my main character will be extremely dark, and players might often find him frustrating. He’s a truly unsettling character. The downside of NTR games, on the other hand, is the anti-NTR crowd. A lot of people attack these kinds of games for no reason.No matter what I choose, there’s one more problem—as I mentioned at the beginning, I’m a beginner in almost every aspect. Since this will be my first game, it likely won’t be a high-quality product. Because of this alone, I’m considering making a simple NTR game instead of wasting my best story.

Sorry for the long post. But if you were in my shoes, what would you do?

I think it doesn't matter either way. What really separates the successful vs the unsuccessful, at least financially, is the length of content and update frequency. You can have a good slgame that releases twice a year and you won't get any support. While there are plenty of worst games that updates once or twice a month that gets way more financial support because it stays relevant longer in people's minds.

Well, it depend how you'll make your game, because it's not just an income, it's also expenses, that vary depending one what you decide to do.

Not to discourage you, but a good story, even when well written and correctly handled, do not necessarily mean success.
Players are versatile, while the oldest ones (in presence, not necessarily in age) tend to be more selective. You can have a perfect story, yet have near to no one who want to try your game and see that it's actually a perfect story.

But how much would people actually like it? It would be a slow burn type of game, and it would take time for things to fall into place. I believe this is a risky choice when it comes to keeping people’s interest.
So far with what you said, you'll not interest players who want to fap, your MC's personality is too deep and there will be too much text to read. So, as long as the story is interesting, players will stay whatever if there's sex or not.
A game like The DeLuca Family only had less than a dozen nude CGs until it started to include sex, in it's fourth or fifth update, I don't remember precisely. What didn't prevented it to already have a strong fan base, with around 600 patrons, before it finally happened.

It isn't. Among the 20,590 games currently available, only 1,746 are NTR games, against 1,984 for it's nemesis, harem games. And it's nothing compared to romance (4,112) or (2,824). Even futa/trans (1,882) or cheating (1,875) have more games than NTR.
Despite what some believe, it's one of the less popular genres when it come to the story dynamic.


If you were in my position, which path would you choose?
Well, if US$ 100/month would already put me in good position, I wouldn't care a single second about the earning. Actually, the median earning is around US $200/month. So, even if your game need few months before being know, if your story is actually half as good as you think, you would earn at least those US $100/month before the end of your first year.

If your focus is on money the best would be NTS AI games. Just go to latest updates on top of the page and filter for AI. Check the amount they already make on patreon after 1-2 updates. Just focus on frequent updates and you should be good.
