There's a slight chance I may be mixing up two games, but this is how I remember it. You were on your way to a mission with your female partner and talking about leaving your wife for her. At the mission you both get shot and end up in the hospital. Your partner stays in a coma, and you go back to your wife and daughter and have to decide whether or not to patch things up with your wife. You end up working at a school, I think as a campus cop.
