Well said, recreation.Honestly I don't understand why so many people ask about this. Don't get this wrong, there is nothing wrong with asking for input, but in the end you are the one who has to decide what and how you want to do things. If you only go for what other people like, you might end up hating your own game. Do it the way you want to do it.
In the end I will make the game Ive always wanted, but I was afraid people would really dislike the idea of using another game to make my own game.
I think art style is important in the end result of the game, and in the larger picture. Minecraft wouldn't be the same without it's art-style. And many people who see games with similar art-styles to Minecraft see it as a lazy copying of something. Especially people using the Minecraft engine.
This is just an example. But on this site, even, you can see so many people using Daz models that were popularized in other games. The girl from DMD comes to mind. I've seen that model in about a dozen games since, and it feels strange to me. I think as long as work is made to differentiate characters, or even a way of referencing the past, it can work really well. Artists using others' assets still work very hard on their vision, and I can relate to that. But it's something many people are commenting on, and it can cause trouble I think if used as a crutch.
I think at this point, I will make this game using Honey Select characters. Working very hard to make them unique and likable. MAYBE later on I may decide to try to use my own art, as I will continue developing it in the future. That can either be a different edition of the game, or I may just do it for the next one.
Thank you again for your response. I will keep your advice in mind
Good vibes out,
