There are two types of books, blue and red.
Blue increases the number of items that can be bought in the store. If I'm not mistaken, without books, you can have a maximum of 1 item of the same type, with the first book already 2, and with two books (maybe three), the limit rises to 5 items.
Red Books increase the amount of sympathy for stroking the heroine on the head. First book +2, second book +3 sympathy.

Maybe you did something wrong, because the game works fine without any crashes.
try to re download or move the folder somewhere, maybe the folder path is too long or something, i've played from start to finish and no crashes along the way
