Update 2019-03-24:
Spotify changed how their ad system works to stop people from using this method. They also changed their TOS saying they can ban any account being caught using this. Afaik there's no way for them to detect that you're doing this, as several companies would limit for example the updating of spotify, but again, thought I'd let you know before using this.
So due to this update you'll not be able to use this method on recent versions and you'll have to download a previous version and block it's updates. If you don't wish to do that, there's several other tutorials out there, but they require either breaking your spotify by blocking certain essential features or using 3rd party software.
PPS: I always viewed this as otp and from the looks of it, it will block shit like the webplayer. I'd just stick to the above unless your ads are still coming in.

- If your current spotify version is 1.8 skip to step 4. If not continue to step 2
- Uninstall spotify.
- Download
You must be registered to see the linksand do not install it until you have reached last step.
- Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and open the hosts file with a text editor. (I'd suggest notepad++)
- At the end of the file add:

- Save and It will ask you to launch your text editor in admin mode.
- Say yes, wait for it to reload and save again.
