Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. But I'm just wondering if anyone knows what steps someone could take if they're wanting to take over an abandoned game and continue the game/ finish the game that someone else started?

  1. Research Ownership and Rights:
    • Determine who owns the rights to the game. If it's a commercial game, contact the original developers or publishers.
    • If it's an open-source project, review the project's licensing terms and conditions.
  2. Contact the Original Developers:
    • Reach out to the original developers or creators to express your interest and intentions.
    • Discuss the possibility of obtaining permission or guidance to continue the project.
  3. Assess the Game's Status:
    • Evaluate the current state of the game, including its code, assets, and documentation.
    • Determine what work remains to be done to complete or improve the game.
  4. Build a Team:
    • Recruit a team of developers, artists, designers, and testers who share your vision for the game.
    • Collaboration is crucial for a successful revival.
  5. Set Clear Goals:
    • Define your objectives for the project. Are you continuing the game as-is, improving it, or taking it in a new direction?
    • Establish a roadmap and development plan.
  6. Legal Considerations:
    • Consult with legal experts if necessary to navigate licensing, copyright, and intellectual property issues.
    • Ensure that your project complies with all relevant laws and agreements.
  7. Preserve Existing Resources:
    • Back up and preserve the existing game code, assets, and documentation.
    • Create a version control system for efficient collaboration.
  8. Community Engagement:
    • Engage with any existing community around the game. Seek their input and support.
    • Create a central communication platform, such as a forum or Discord server, for discussions and updates.
  9. Development and Testing:
    • Begin development based on your defined goals and roadmap.
    • Regularly test and debug the game to ensure it's functional and enjoyable.
  10. Funding and Resources:
    • Identify potential sources of funding or support for your project, such as crowdfunding, donations, or grants.
    • Budget for development costs, including software licenses, server hosting, and marketing.
  11. Regular Updates and Transparency:
    • Keep the community and stakeholders informed of your progress through regular updates.
    • Be transparent about your development process and any challenges you encounter.
  12. Quality Assurance:
    • Conduct thorough playtesting and quality assurance to ensure a polished and bug-free game.
  13. Distribution and Marketing:
    • Plan how you will distribute and promote the finished game, whether through online stores, game platforms, or other channels.
    • Consider marketing strategies to attract players and build awareness.
  14. Launch and Post-Launch Support:
    • Launch the game and provide ongoing support and updates to address player feedback and fix issues.
  15. Community Management:
    • Manage the game's community to foster a positive and engaging environment.
    • Encourage feedback, discussions, and player involvement.
  16. Documentation and Resources:
    • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for the game's development, code, and assets.
    • Offer resources, tutorials, or modding tools if applicable.
  17. Stay Adaptable:
    • Be prepared to adapt your plans based on community feedback and changing circumstances.
    • Continuously assess and improve the game as needed.
P.S. Yes, I copy-pasted this; I had the whole process written ages ago, just in case. If I missed anything, feel free to ask. Also, keep in mind that depending on the title and game you are aiming to revive, not every step from this list may be necessary. Different games may require different steps, but having a cheat sheet on hand can be quite handy.

Good luck!

p.p.s what game is it ? :whistle::rolleyes::unsure:

The steps doesn't matters.

The real question is: Are you able to copy the original art style (including owning the original assets if it use Daz Studio or an illusion studio), to copy the original writing style, and to continue the story in the exact same tracks that it was started ?

If you aren't able to do this, then the game will radically change mid development, and this will displease everyone.

If you are able to do this, then you are also able to do your own game, with your own art style, your own writing style and your own story, what will always be better.
