The next update should have a skip button. Their discord is complaining about the same thing. Definitely needs more interaction tbh because it's basically a glorified video.

I hope this doesn't discourage them from trying something like this again because the format could work if they styled it like a choose-your-own-story format

Agreed. They have the blueprint right there with their videos but they just chose to do the most generic thing possible. However it's still a beta so maybe they'll implement more interactivity in the future.
