RPGM - The Last Sovereign [v0.77.2] [Sierra Lee]

I have tried playing this game over a few updates now and honestly did not understand why it was so highly recommended. I'm not very fond of the humor, even if it is poking fun at tropes sometimes.

Combat is mostly your standard fare of what RPGM has to offer, however the balance , skills and how the characters work requires more decision making that just smashing basic attack. Battles are also not random encounters but enemies you see on the field, which don't always re-spawn; that's a nice touch of game design there to add balance and stop you from just mindlessly grinding away.

After I got through the introduction and spent a bit of time with the characters and story, I do now get it. Its a 4/5 because its still RPGM and I am not a fan of the humor or how frequently it comes up. Its otherwise a well crafted game, but if you're looking for something to "play with one hand" you may want to pass this one over. Like many others have said - this is more of a game with adult content than an adult game.

It is a well-written RPG made by an intelligent person who wanted to convey something genuine. This is why it is so different from 99% of "adult" games. Thematically, it stands apart from other well-written RPGs (like Disco Elysium, Planescape: Torment, Betrayal at Krondor - you name it), because:

    • there is a heavy focus on adult themes (it is a harem-story, duh),
    • it puts a whole bunch of large-scale religious, political and social issues in the spotlight,
    • it successfully integrates the focus stated above with a personal story of the protagonist, which may give you a power rush,
    • it carefully tracks your progress using an enormous amount of variables that reflect your progress and decisions.

masterclass story and character development of mc and companions, those scenes that are finished are great and i genuinely recommend playing this one if not for porn then for story.

It is challenging yet rewarding. Having great wiki in case you end up tryharding the best story outcome as I did. Only in few moments I was feeling lost where to progress since the quests are well described while not truly spoiling exact solution.

Best adult game on this site, bar none. It is however only a mediocre porn game. The explicit scenes are wonderfully written, just as everything else in TLS. I also quite like the art. I wasn't much of a fan of it when it was freshly announced, but it quite grew on me. I not once fapped to this game though, but I wouldn't fap to an amazingly well write erotic novella either, it's just not my preferred medium to get the deed done. This, in essence is the reason why I called it a mediocre porn game, it will get you in the mood if you are a freak of nature like me and like dirty text, but it probably won't stimulate you enough to bring you to touch yourself.

With that out of the way, I really couldn't care less. This might be the RPG I spent the most time with. BG3 might change that in my lifetime. We are talking about 500h+ (timespan of ~5 years), albeit it being on different playthroughs obviously. You can probably expect about 100-140h of playtime on your first playthrough to the current content. The game is almost finished, and probably will be this year. Pretty much only the finale + epilogue are in need of being done.

I hope the sound of management excites you, because if not, you will probably be pretty disappointed in TLS. However if you have the same autistic itch as me, you've probably found one of your favourite games.

The 4 main pillars of management are:
    Kingdom management
    Army building
    Growing your mercantile endeavours
    Religion (later on)
Each of these are amazingly done. Each one. I'm still flabbergasted, how a sole dev can manage this.

Now to another point that might rub you the wrong way. The Wiki.
The best part about it is, that it is so awesomely maintained and structured, you might think it is being done by Sierra herself. It's completely community driven however. The Wiki is also the sole companion you MUST bring into your active party if you are a completionist (but I really recommend it for every player, because for some decisions its not really clear what benefits and drawbacks you'll get from them. I completely get if this might tick you off, this CAN be a huge negative, but if you like management games, you most likely also like Wikis, so the core audience will be pleased.), albeit it not being in game. Main reason for that being, is that the management side of things must obviously be gamified, and TLS has done that via numbers. A lot of 'em. Most of these are hidden, here is where the Wiki comes into play. Not only is EVERY single variable there for you to look at, but also every different dialogue branch influencing variables. Via this you theoretically don't need to play the game more than one time, because you can see every branching decision and its effect on there. I obviously recommend you do it though ^^. Can't wait to try a disaster save once the game is done, because o boy can a lot go wrong if you really want it to.

Just as everything else, the world building is also fantastically well done. Do you want to know how religion and sexuality interact with each other? Do you want to know how a Succubus can also be a priestess? Do you want to know the lore of multiple countries and how they interact with each other? Do you even want to know why monsters drop the equivalent of money upon their death? Sierra has you covered.

The biggest plus besides the management are the characters for me. I shockingly can't name a character that I find mediocre in terms of villains, companions, big players in this world. That is especially true for the companions, or let's call them by their intended, your harem. They are all charming in their own way. None of them are neglected, and each of them has a purpose why she is accompanying you on your journey. TLS reads like a novel from an well established author and not like a free game on a smut site. It's leagues above everything else on here.

Sierra really is a rather harsh mistress, because almost no other game expect one, will scratch the same itch for me as TLS has done. I repeat that, only one real alternative. Please check out my profile, because I can't name it here because of the Reviewing Rules. It's not my game, just one I've found through @MidnightKing. You rock dude!

Please give TLS a spin, Sierra deserves all the love and support for this masterpiece of a game.

    Important:
For the love of god please play through the whole prologue. It takes like 15 minutes max. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I promise. The tone of the MC will change, on way or another.

Short version: it's a good game and worth playing.

Long version: after more than 100 hours of playing I can't recommend it, the game is well made and it's clear that many, many hours of effort and dedication have gone into it, but the game fails mainly where it should shine: the choices.
Throughout the game there are many choices that (in theory) shape the world and the characters around it, but in the end none of them really matter.
The player's choices don't influence WHAT HAPPENS, they just dictate HOW THINGS HAPPEN, a simple example is in the first war of the game, the villain will always be defeated regardless of the choices you make, what will change is if a character dies or a place is destroyed, in simple terms death/destruction means that less content will be accessible in the future and the player will unconsciously start looking for the best outcome with the intention of "not losing content".
Over time, it will be common to play with an open walkthrough, since making a wrong choice will mean having to reset the game:
-You didn't want to invest in the ice cream industry in chapter 2? Too bad, in chapter 7 that would stop the enemy attack on your capital and the city's market will be destroyed.
-You didn't rescue the cat from the tree in chapter 3? Too bad, that will open a dimensional portal for an enemy invasion at the end of chapter 6.
-Did you choose to prostitute a fucking succubus, a being made for sex, who one hour ago was fucking everyone in the town's fucking church? What a shame. Throughout the game, this will activate countless variables to make your life more difficult.

I confess that I'm curious to do a gameplay focused on all the wrong choices, but I think I've used up too much of my life on this game.

There are some other things that bother, but the worst is the MC's step-daughter, it's quite funny how the game tries to kink shame diaper fetish but doesn't have the balls to make Robin be the MC's REAL DAUGHTER, stepincest is so real as much as vegan meat.
The MC's wife coming back undoes all the drama from the first chapters, at least it would be interesting to see Robin and her mother reunion, but... oops, I mean sTePmOm...

The harem part doesn't necessarily bother me, but having so many women in it doesn't bring diversity, on the contrary, they all seem so generic late game. An example is the daughter of the purple succubus lord, interacting with her was quite fun, but when she joined the rest of the harem she became an extra. Worse is the fact that I can't choose who enters or leaves, for example, if it were up to me the woman with the explosives would still be being fucked in that shit cave to this day.

Anyway, the game resembles a image created by AI, at first it seems perfect, but the more you pay attention the more easily problems appear.

this game gives me a stomachache just thinking about it.

it’s good, mind you, but between the game design choices of “no grinding allowed, not sandbox” and “every decision should have consequences” this will trigger any and all optimization compulsions. If you don’t go staring at the wiki you will probably end up playing it like 5 times to get a route you feel satisfied with.

in return, you get very competent writing, brain-stretching puzzles and fights, and decent cgs. (it’s been a hot while since I last played tho)

for people who actually play funger and black souls.

This ain't your usual vaporware 7 years in dev and still on chapter 1 shit. This ain't your traditional harem story where a featureless protagonist amasses a brazilion girls for no actual reason that are even more featureless than the protag. This should be to Porn what Star Wars is to Sci-Fi and LOTR is to Fantasy. The Golden Standard. I've dumped about 700 hours into this, having originally stumbled upon it in like 2017 and forgotten about it until two years back. My current save is 97 hours in and there's still another 30-ish hours left until I bottom out and have to wait for the next update. Not once have I regretted starting this addiction. Sierra has singlehandedly proven that you can have a game with porn in it that is an actual, enjoyable game with a good plot even if the plot revolves primarily around sex. Get out of here, download it on Steam and buy Yarra's Thanks you horny bastards.

This game is what all games should strive to be, not just H games. It has been a couple of years since I played it while waiting for the end, the content should be similar but expanded, yet all i can do still is recommend it to anyone who likes rpg's.

Story/Gameplay: The gameplay is phenomenal. I am not one to shy away from cheating in rpgmaker games to make them more enjoyable, especially in second or more playthroughs. But even now after already having played through twice, once the game is completed it will be the first of thousands, including non H games, that I would not even contemplate cheating due to how amazing the core game is and how it would sully it. It;s challenging yet so extremely rewarding and fair, making you appreciate the difficulty in making the correct decisions and happily accept the drawbacks of your decisions as well (Not a single game in my life has ever made me accept having some negative consequences to choices as much as this one has). The story and gameplay is all this game needs in its review, art is almost inconsequential, even though its great as well.

As someone who has happily waited 2 years for its completion, and recently bought the steam DLC that is literally just the "pay something for this free game" dlc as it has no content in it at all, this is an amazing game that anyone who hasn't played yet should try, and it is the first I can confidently say I will wait endlessly for the completion of no matter how long it takes.

This is a very demanding game...

I have rarely been so conflicted in reviewing a game as this, and I could honestly give it between 2 and 5 stars.

Writing (4 stars): Being textbased, the game thrives on text, to a point where I've sometimes wondered if it shouldn't just have been a novel.

Visuals (2 stars): While the frames are nice, each scene consist of very few images mostly with text laid over.

Gameplay (3 stars): Unless you play the Storymode version, the game is punishing, even if you play the storymode version the game has so many dependencies (you did that then, then this now), that it feels more like having to follow a recipe and less like a game.
At the same time the very old school RPGM interface, and the lack of (!) and other userfriendly additions make this hardcore to a fault.

At the same time, the story is engaging and plays on cultural interactions and expectations, on philosophical reflections and (sadly a lot of management without having the interface to really support it).

Its a hardcore, complex, demanding slowburner, which requires a certain mindset to enjoy - but its really well made, and if you like this sort of game, you'll love TLS.

This game has better writing and game-play design than most AAA companies.

I have enjoyed every moment of this game so far (60+ hours), and my only little pet-peeve is that there is optional content that can be missed if you aren't careful.

Just wanted to address two 1 star reviews I saw:
1st review gave up on the game because they couldn't be bothered to play for more than 10 min for
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
. Sure, if the game isn't your jam, that's fine. But even Steam has a 2 hour return policy. At least put in a fraction of effort before shitting on something.

2nd review says they can't recommend the game because they're mad that the game has been in active development for multiple years and it has too much to do now. That the developer is milking the COMPLETELY FREE game...
I've seen dozens of games here that have been vaporware with Patreons making 10k+ a month. This is not that.

It`s may be good game. Maybe very good.
But it`s has very trash opening. Generic RPGM combat, bad writing. Trash, child like, art in sex scenes. All this leading you to defeat scene. Maybe it`s post modern irony. Or something like that. But all of this give me enough bad impression to shutdown the game and never touch it again. Cause nothing at the start show any sign that things will improve later.

I have played this game more than a DECADE ago. It is a case of when developer had a good start but did not know when to STOP. You cannot be milking forever the same old game on old engine.

FYI, this game has a walkthrough that is almost 100 pages long. I cannot recommend it to anyone. Basicly it is like Path of exile after 50 seasons, all the bloat and unnecessary complexity stuck on top of each other creating a maze of bs gameplay/story/mechanics, dragged out story quality is turning bad very quick into a filler naruto style nonsense, all of this on absolutely ancient engine with art that is no longer considered decent in H Games.

As of 10 year agos for this game I had a positive impression, but it is madness to keep going with this into 2024.

I have played this game a couple of years ago and have not played since because of how long it would take to get back to the point I was previously at. I do remember this game quite well though.

I think TLS has a lot of great things going for it. The main problem with TLS is that it tries too hard to be an actual *game*. It's simply not something that can be done using an outdated RPG maker engine. The writing is beautiful, and I think this game would've done much better as a VN.

The last sovereign would've been legendary if it was at this point in 2006. Unfortunately, as someone living in the present, I can't go from playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 to spending 100 hours trying to seriously utilize and play everything that RPG maker has to offer. It's beyond boring. I don't think using RPG maker is necessarily bad, but I think the emphasis should be on the plot and not trying to create actual gameplay that involves strategizing/taking battles seriously. It would be like trying to play an early 2000s final fantasy game and it's just simply not worth my time.

Nothing to say which hasn't been already said. This game is so good I would have played it even if there was no sexual content, the writing/gameplay is that good. If you're here for a quick fap, I'd advise moving on, but if you're looking for an incredibly deep game with fantastic writing, give this one a try.

The first Sierra Lee game I've played was Ouroboros, which was small, somewhat bad on a gameplay side and honestly more of an experiment. What it had was a ballsy spin on the concept of a generic RPGM game and some good fucking writing (that's an adjective, not "sex dialogue", I can't even remember any of it since it's been years).

Played Desecration of Wings... found out it was by her only a couple days ago. The only thing I can remember is the writing being good.

What was this game... Right, Once Ever After, not half-bad, surprisingly good script. Oh, wait, Sierra Lee too, makes sense.

It seems the running theme of her games is her being an incredible author, with the porn being just a passenger in the car of story (or something, I forgot where I was going with that).
What both horrifies and fascinates me in equal parts is how if you check the wiki for the game, every other event has so many consequences down the line that the maths for different variables easily fills the screen. Said some aristo is a fuckwad? Get -3 to your political score three chapters later because he is.
This here ain't porn, this is serious shit, this is fourty-plus hours of quality world-building and good imagination, and the fact Sierra just gives it to us fappers for free blows my mind harder than Qum D'umpe does.

This game is great, if you are okay with using a walkthrough and are in it for the story. Think of a very mature "ecchi" anime but sexual stuff actually happens and there is actually good writing. I honestly skim through the sex scenes.

The problem with this being on f95 is that people are generally looking for fapping material, but actually try to play this and you will most likely love it . If the game didnt have hentai in it, it would easily be a hit. You can tell it's a passion project.

Also, if you are frustrated that you missed something that happened 10 hours ago, you can use thosha's saves.

Disclaimer: I haven't completed the game.

It starts as a generic RPGM game, but don't let that trick you away from this masterpiece: a few minutes in you'll get into the real game and enjoy the pleasure of finally having a well-designed, intelligent MC with sensible dialogue, while also featuring some braindead bimbo sidekicks for humor.

If you're tired of all RPGM feeling like the same game with slightly different artwork, give this one a try. The developer has put some love here and it shows.

I love it, you have to try it even for once if you are an rpg fan, Been skipping this game for years because the visuals is not good enough for me , but as a 2014 game it's understandable, what I didn't know the story and battle system is good, it's a bummer I can't create a custom character to feel it's me, but it's fine since simon is pretty good mc

There are some hard battle moments where you need to Save scumming because it's not possible to do it in one run with only 1 save, but as a hardcore gamer this is fun, one of the things I liked is that it got decision system, every decision leads to different outcome ,

Anyone played Sukoiden? the most thing players liked in that game is base management is and this game will have it, in chapter you will have your own castle with your own people ( harem included) , Truthfully I came to enjoy adults scenes, but I grown more to love the story , grinding and saving funds because it's limited, also the one thing the best of all as an rpg fan is that, monsters don't appear randomly by walking, so you can pretty much enjoy grinding in this game, the only thing i can think of for this game to be more better is to have more adult visual art.

Sadly for 3 stars, because I got stuck in Chapter 4 : Council of Gawnfall quest, looks like it only has 1 path that I need to take.

For me playing a game should not always be a relaxing and rewarding experience. The game can be rage-inducing, funny, sad or scary - and the same goes for a porn game. I really apreciate when the porn games aims to be something more, turning more into an erotic adventure, and my favourite games on this website all share this trait. The porn game however can never be two things - it should not be tedious and it should not punish the player.
    1. Tedious.
Playing The Last Sovereign is a fucking work. You better keep your schedule open, because Tolstoy in his russian novels managed to be more concise and straight to the point. I appreciate when there is a lot of content to enjoy, but literal hours upon hours of rpg where there are multiple segments where you play as different characters is fucking tedious. It gets worse with every hour - you go through multiple wars, rebuilding the cities - and at one point you understand that you are not playing a porn game anymore, but a management game, and shitty one at that. And this is when punishing the player comes to play.
    2. This game fucking hated me.
You get invested in characters? You want to win the battles? You want everyone to be happy by getting the best outcome? Oh boy, you are in for a ride. You think you can just take the most logical choices and get on with it? Nope! You made a wrong choice seven hours ago - now one of your companions is dead. Are you having fun yet? People here apparently love that choices matter, and I understand the sentiment, but then you should make the choices clear and make the concequences of the choices understandable. You will balance the affection of the characters like a juggling clown in the circus - one wrong anwer from hundreds of choices, one point of affection short, and you WILL have consequences. But there is a remedy from that - the legendary walkthrough - an incredibly long and tedious wiki page, that you could read for hours.
And at some point, when you are in the middle of the third random battle, dumbly following a huge and insanely complicated walkthrough letter for letter, trying to salvage your story and save your team, but it's already ruined, because you didn't meet some orc seven hours ago, one simple thought comes to your tired and annoyed mind: Am I having fun in this porn game?
And then you turn this shit off and never play it again. The premise of the game promises you a lot of fun, sexy content - well, that's a fucking lie.
