Honestly, I think the most recent iteration that kinda middle-grounds Claremont's intent and the Azazel concept works well enough. There's at least more precedent for it compared to some retroactive sexuality changes (which I don't personally take issue with, but that's an off-topic matter). I think the only part of it I take issue with is the "why", but that's more a gripe with how writers use Destiny herself at the end of the day. Also Nightcrawler's parentage is something that will need to be heavily debated by the dev team eventually.
Do we go by Claremont's intentions? Do we stick to what was originally published? The retcon?
Just tossing an idea out for consideration:
In an effort to subvert the melodrama surrounding the canon retcon singularity, have Azazel just be some guy they happened to know/have met & thought was hot, and a night of shapeshifting roleplay went a little too right. Keeps the basics of the incident without the weirdness of the prophecies as an excuse. Just people being people. Also avoids any concerns of infidelity with regard to the characters - not that Mystique being in a closed relationship has really ever been a thing, lest we forget the much more concerning Foxx incident...... Which would be fucked up to be the target of in-game, though a little funny when considering how so many players seem to run into cheating issues as is In a cosmic sense, of course.
Not expecting this idea to stick, of course. Y'all take whatever direction you think best fits the intended narrative - plus, there's some time before that'll even become relevant in-game, I'd wager. Tossing out pennies, etc.
