I did refer to art, as in, drawings. I would argue that text-based erotica is quite complicated. You would have to describe the act on several pages, while drawings could show it in a single image.

I can't imagine reading some of those fanfics for the first time and not crying with laughter.


With anything you can fill in the blanks in your head. When seeing text, most people translate it into images. When you see a sketch, you add in any missing details yourself. When you see a still image of people having sex, chances are you imagine them being in motion. If the lewd part is obscured by something in the foreground or left unsaid, to your brain it probably still happened. If it's something anatomically improbable, you may spend extra time imagining it and trying to make it work. And so on and so forth. It only depends on how far you or your subconscious wants to take it at the time. Mixing some text with an image can also be done to magnify the effect.
