The first installment of the trilogy is essentially just a tutorial or a prologue for this game.
You won't miss much if you skip it.
The Three Charms R - The Twelve Monster Girls of Mahoraba is one of the best monster girl themed games I've ever played. Don't believe what anyone else says. It is without a doubt a masterpiece, a true hidden gem. I have no idea how it flew under my radar for so long.
If I had to pick between this game and the third part, I would actually pick this one. Not because this is much better than that one, but I just like the characters and the pacing of this game a bit more.
What makes this trilogy truly shine is the writing and the smut. The smut is truly sensational, and I must thank the translators of this game because they did an amazing job! While there are really good illustrations and art in the game as well, all done by a single artist, that is not the main fapping material. No, it is without a doubt the smut, and it's absolutely god tier. The writers clearly understand what's good. Events may even seem a bit long due to each and every different encounter being truly unique to that character and the act. None of them seemed or felt alike. The story, while a bit cliché, has great worldbuilding and establishes true depth to each monster girl and their little "subcultures" or their personality. It makes you really immersed in the main character you play since it builds an actual connection to them. I would also point out how well the main character itself is written and designed as well. Not even close to your typical brainless Japanese bullshit. There is clear thought behind his illustrated design as well. It is genius.
I must make it clear that this isn't the kind of RPGM game where you should just skip everything to get to the meat of it. Here you really need to focus, especially since it will be important for the player to have actually paid attention to everything to overcome some specific puzzles. You should read every dialogue, speak to every NPC, and read the smut. I would say it is actually worthwhile and enriches the experience. I barely stumbled into something that was unclear or badly translated. Hell, the only thing I remember are some typos here and there. This truly is more of a text-based puzzle game than anything.
If you are someone who is into the genres present here and don't mind using your brain to get to the good stuff, this is a game for you, my friend.
Don't forget to support the devs if you enjoyed it! The Japanese version of the game is available through the DLsite link provided here in the OP.
