I thought the point of the art style for this show was to be so unbelievably un-sexy that the writers could tackle all those awkward parts of growing up without the remote possibility of the characters being sexualized. Clearly we were both wrong.

Yeah, I remember reading them saying that. And then I remember that there are people out there who can put some tits on a stick figure and find that sexy. So I dunno how they came to the conclusion that they can make the art style "so unbelievably un-sexy" that no one can sexualize the characters when even stick figures aren't safe!
