Sort of Justice by Creator Tom
This is another of those crime-themed VNs that works because that’s what it is from the outset. There’s no hiding it behind a college setting or anything like that, we’re pretty much straight into an underground syndicate after a shortish prologue. The prologue itself is a bit ridiculous – it sets the scene, showing that our MC has been in prison for seven years for a crime he did not commit, but the way he was set up and subsequently imprisoned is laughable. It looks like the real perpetrator got MC arrested and convicted based on a “confession” that was practically written in crayon. If you forgive that though, you quickly get into the game itself, which revolves around getting revenge (or sort of justice, I presume) on the person who framed him.
The story is relatively slow (and practically crawls in regard to MC getting his wish of revenge) but does a pretty good job at setting up the wider picture that MC struggles to see. We meet various people involved with a strange benefactor who takes on MC, saying that he also wants to bring down MC’s target. We follow a couple of threads in relation to this, including a new special task force headed by a former top FBI official, which will surely end up working either directly with or against MC before too long.
The visuals are quite neat and although there are few lewds so far, there are some nice potential LIs. It’s definitely something that is story-driven rather than sex-driven though, so the lack of lewds isn’t a problem – I think if the opening couple of chapters had more of them, they would probably feel out of place or forced. The choices are quite minimal as well, and so far seem focused around shaping MC’s character – is he quick to boil over, or does he prefer to try diffusing a situation first?
As the theme promises, this is a reasonably violent game, with fist, knife, and gun fights all taking place more than once. There’s also a bit of torture, murder, and physical assault, and I think it’s all done quite well as it fits the story being told and doesn’t really feel gratuitous. One thing I do have a soft spot for is a kickass woman in this sort of scenario, and although I’d like her to smile once in a while, Samantha fits that bill quite nicely. Malena also gets her share of the action, and I like both characters in the roles they fill.
Overall, I’m quite happy with this so far and look forward to seeing what sort of relationships will form, especially with the stunning neighbour (Elle), the two special task force agents (Claire and Erica), and also with Malena and Ava. Plus, of course, what will happen with Scarlett, the woman who started this whole thing by setting MC up…
