I don't think Dan and Sarah have been very true to the personalities they had in early chapters for a long time. There wasn't so much an evolution as a complete abandonment of character consistency. But Don's strength isn't in realism in things like setting, motives, and actions.

Just to raise my hand to avoid us all being painted this way, I have been happily married for nearly 25 years.
