Okay, gave the game a try, and I think I know what it needs to not be completely impossible to do without cheating. Still complete balls to do, but doable. What it needs is a little bar showing how much your jump is charged.

The jump charges to full so quickly that the difference between the levels of the jumps is difficult to keep track of. A visual queue that shows you where in the timing you are would help immensely there, but still leave you reliant on getting the timing and distance right, so it isn't too easy.
