As a side note, I decided to attempt do the same thing with the jap data provided in the latest release after writing my response, and it worked there.
So pretty sure something broke with the translation.

Found the problem. I think I got all of the problem code. Translator(s?) messed up some scripts causing game to bug out. Try your save and if you come across another issue like that tell me what skill and I can fix it easy.
