FAQ:
How was this translated?
This is a machine translation produced using generative LLMs to handle the translation work; Specifically: Llama-3-8B-Lexi-Uncensored was used to generate high level summaries and initial translations and then llama3-8B-DarkIdol-2.2-Uncensored-1048K was used to refine those translations using the original text as a primary source and the rough translations and summaries as context. It's a new approach, but it shows promise in addressing a number of problems related to context that are specific to translation, but particularly relevant for Japanese, Cantonese, and Taiwanese. I plan to refine this approach further in future projects, but several of the applied examples in this case demonstrate that perhaps volume of context is a less important factor for LLM translation than precision of context.
No remote services were used, and all models ran inside a restricted hardware footprint of 20gb of VRAM on consumer hardware, and there was no measurable production cost associated with this project.
Translator++ was used as the main interface, but some useful code was nicked wholesale from SLR. Some manual word wrapping was necessitated by one of the games plug-ins, but no other manual editing was done.
A major goal was to see how good a machine translation could be produced using open-source LLM's on generally available commodity hardware with a minimum of specialist knowledge or assistance.

How complete is this translation?
Pretty damned complete, all narrative text should be translated.
All game text should be translated except for the text pop-ups that infrequently occur after certain events in game above the protagonists.
These are not implemented consistently and contain no meaningful data not already conveyed by the context of the scene.
A confirmation prompt when staying at Inns is untranslated, my parser is having trouble with it, and I don't feel like fixing it in json.
Everything else should be translated.

Was anything added or removed?
Emerlad's Rpgmaker Cheat tool was added (press 1 to access)
A plug-in that added an option to force the game to launch in full-screen was removed, it caused a lot of problems, and served no other function.
There are duplicate copies of all standing battle art assets because that was the simplest solution to the obnoxious way the game handles enemy names and assets, it adds 150'ish mb to the games size, but the alternatives were impractical for a variety of reasons.

How good is this translation?
For a machine translation, it's pretty good. It's almost always clear where to go or what to do next, and meaning is generally conveyed accurately.
Some nuance generally gets lost, but this is NOT a subtle script to start with, so it lends itself well to machine translation.
There is some occasional confusion of sentence subject, and pronoun selection is occasionally botched, but not to any extent that impacts playability.
On rare occasions it does go full poetry, but they are few and far between, and the meaning is usually still clear when presented in context.
The two pass approach often results in a more 'edited' feel to the writing, like there are two different writers and one of them is much better than the other- and in a way that's true, since two different LLMS were used and one had much larger context support and a stronger base to work from. The real problem from my view is the clear inconsistency between the two styles of writing, but that's something I'm confident I can improve.
A human translation would absolutely be better- but that didn't seem to be in the cards for this title, and the purpose of this translation was as much about testing current local llm models and translation methodology as it was about translating the game.

I found a bug, how do I get a hold of you to report it?
You don't; Fix it yourself you lazy sod.

Hey I don't have this game will you give me a copy?
No. Pay for your bloody smut. The game is only 5USD, and Applesoft definitely earned their bit on this one.

Install instructions
1. Extract and unpack the game.
2. Live dangerously, don't make any backups.
3. Copy the "www" folder from the translation patch into the game folder, overwrite when prompted.

Damn, another fcking MTL. I have failed you all.

Anyway, thanks for that, I guess. As long as the people are happy. And if not, maybe this will be motivation for me to release my translation.

I mean you can release yours too if you really want to. Also it's not basic DeepL or GoogleTranslate MTL from the sound of it, Llama-based seems like it could be DazedAnon level.

I don't think it's as good as DazedAnon stuff, but it is a lot better than DeepL or GoogleTranslate, and no one had to pay for it since it doesn't cost money to use Llama. Maybe if he had spent a couple days editing/proofreading...
