The father of the family either left or died. Money has become short because I believe they either have a business that is failing due to the abscene of the father (previous owner) and now the mother is trying to run it. OR, the father was the sole bread winner of the family and due to him being gone, they (mother and son) now need to work to feed and provide the family.
The most explicit thing I remember is that: MC walks to the kitchen where he sees his uncle from behind uncomfortably wrapping around his mother whilst she is trying tp wash the dishes (or cook on the stove). Saying something to the effect of "Come on, sleep or get with me. Now that your husband is gone, I know your family is having money trouble, you don't want them to starve or be homeless do you? If you become mine, I'll provide for you and the whole family". The mother replies something like "your my husband brother, I can't believe you would do this...(can't remember the rest)".
(Maybe this is another similiar story) I believe there was a conspiracy foreshadowed reveal in the kitchen conversation, that revealed the uncle was involved in the father dissapearance to get his wife (and maybe the business).
