For a lot of people, it's as simple as contrast. Big versus small, rich versus poor, boss versus worker, powerful versus weak, beauty versus beast. Your typical 'FUB' is a wrapper for a lot of overblown, 'negative' traits to play against a character with lots of 'positive' traits.
