What it means is:
1. The team has invested what cash they have into the game
2. They'll see if they can raise some more with Kickstarter, but at $500 it's pretty clear they're not relying on it
3. Once they're moving they'll use Patreon as usual to keep things running.
A few quick feedbacks;
- Unless you're doing stuff that Renpy can't do, use Renpy. This seems a straight VN, and (trust me), Renpy will do that better than Unity. I'm speaking as someone that uses Unity both for his normie gamedev job, and for porn.
- Don't give the final game away for free, sell it on steam/itch.io. This is both a commercial decision (Steam is a very significant payout for these games) and a supporter decision (it lets you give Patreons and Kickstarters steam keys as thanks for believing in you).
- The rules of the game is to under-promise, and over-deliver. You're over-promising and will likely under-deliver (unless you really think $504 will let you set up an original sound-track and localization). Players *do* notice this, and especially the prosumers will tend to call you out on it.
It *is* possible to triple-dip (KS-Patreon-Steam), but you have to understand what each of the different audiences want out of the experience before you do.
Thanks for getting clear things, that's exactly what it means!
-Related to your feedback, I can't really tell you much about our planning there, but we have only one option that is not possible with Ren'Py and that's what is keeping us on Unity.
-We did not consider steam/itch.io but looks like you know what are you doing so I will show it to the team and make a decision on it!
-We don't expect to get all the stuff paid with 504$, we have investors, and the studio itself has some money to keep the project alive. The under-promise/over-deliver is something that we took into consideration but, we thought it was better to tell almost everything we are planning to get in our game.
-We will talk about the triple-dip, which seems a good option but with a lot of work about audiences and experience.
Thanks for your feedback and support, we threw this post to get all the comments we are getting, learn and discuss is a must and we are here for that. Thanks once again and hope you keep an eye on us!
