Keep in mind that not all machine translations are created equally. For some users who put in time and care, it is simply a way to translate without actually knowing Japanese.
As you know, a machine translator will often turn a sentence into gobbledygook. Some translators then simply put that into the game and what you get is a game that despite technically being translated, it is almost impossible to understand. However, a few go line by line editing them to try stay close to the original meaning whenever possible but prioritizing making it easier to understand.

it means machine translation. usually pretty shit because most of the time no one goes through and corrects it and even when they do its hard to make sense of a lot of lines since theyre near impossible to understand 40% of the time

Machine translation. Generally ends up breaking the game because of you know, words in another language can have many meanings, and machine translation picks the most obvious words it has in its library, but doesn't account for other meanings in the text itself, resulting in loss of meanings in translation, as well other things that make it worse than a properly translated game. And that's not talking about other tinkering with the game itself in order to get a translation which results in more bugs and general instability that the original game doesn't have.

However, natural translations aren't easy due to serious time requirement, but also necessity of knowledge of language the translation aimed at, you can't translate a Japanese game without the knowledge of Japanese, because otherwise you get a botched result due to lack of knowledge as well issues translating the text.

In general however, if I had a choice between a translation that is done within minutes/hours merely to count as a "translation", pushing potential translators away as they think its done and not actually help users to play the product, and a untranslated game, I would rather not play it until its done later on. I can wait, like by playing other games especially ones not played at all, and you should as well.
