What kind of games do you automatically avoid?

I know that everyone has their various preferences, but I wonder, are there folks like me who will simply avoid particular game types, regardless of how interesting it may look.

For example, I tend to just ignore RPG maker games, because their controls tend to be a bit... wonky. I know some folks have done some really amazing things with them, but overall I've found them to be low effort. Sure, there's a couple out there that aren't but I generally can't wrap my head around playing those.

So what about you? Is there any game type that you avoid? Whether it's a preference, style, game engine, or whatever?

games without any animations. I don't care if they pay me to play. other than that I don't think there is any other genre I would avoid.

In an AVN, I avoid everything that is not RenPy, everything. I like to have control and only RenPy gives me that... And for the rest, I generally avoid Sandbox.

Kenetic Novels, games that are "very anime" (hard to define), 3d CG games without animations.

VNs, renpy games most of the time and forced NTR games (games that force you into a ntr route without reason and could easily be avoidable but dumb dev likes that sht so they go that way)

In general, i avoid non-RENPY games. I'll try occasional UNITY games.

RPGM games i avoid like the plague.

Games with the "Interracial" tag often turn me off, since games with that tag on F95 all-too-often have disgustingly racist images {and action} that someone else {who i'm pretty sure was black, himself} described with the term "Mandingo" the other day. It's been my rule to check out the screenshots when a game has the "Interracial" tag to try to suss out if the game is offensivein order to aid me to make a decision as to whether to download.

Since for the last week or so i'm not seeing any images on F95 except people's avatars i have to decide whether to download games with that tag on NO information - so i pretty much skip them.

...though I like RPG Maker, I actually kinda agree with you here.

Especially if it's RPG Maker MV/MZ with standard assets. There's exceptions to this, but like 90% of them are lazy cashgrab porngames. Bland basic bitch gameplay to pad out the bland basic bitch porn scenes.

On the flip side; you can usually see if a game is worth a try by checking if it's got custom or otherwise unusual assets. Devs who put effort in sprites and background assets are usually also devs who care more about the story and gameplay angles. Case in point: Claire's Quest.

As for my other no-nos;

Incest. I don't mind that people are into this, but I really don't get why this tag is so popular. It's a genuine turnoff for me, even in fiction. Frex, I was actually glad when Patreon forced games like School of Lust and Zombie's Retreat to edit out all their incest content.

Scat. Thankfully not nearly as common as incest. Again, I'm not gonna knock you if you're into that shit - but I just can't handle it. At all. Piss doesn't bother me, but scat is just viscerally repulsive to me even if it's all manga-style drawn stuff.

Anything here tagged Real Porn. Something about knowing that pirated live action porn was used in a game just really shatters my willing suspension of disbelief. I'm not sure what it is. Weirdly, I don't get this with games with blatantly stolen art, like those really early Newgrounds or Mausland porn games.

You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

Stuff with Koikatsu or Honey Select 3D models. This one's a little weird, because I know that these are solid programs that allow for a ton of customization. Even if they're not quite on par with Daz3D. But something about them just makes it all feel fake to me. Weirdly, I can appreciate AI-generated stuff just fine.

"Fandisc" VNs, i.e. standalone addons to earlier VNs. Especially when the original VN is nowhere to be found (and may not even have been translated). I've seen this a few times, and it bothered me so much that 'fandisc' is now an automatic hard pass for me.

Kinetic novels. I like my visual novels with choices, thank you. Maybe not the Dharker Studios-style "here's a hundred choices and completely irrelevant stuff can lock you onto a bad end" glut of choices and flags. But I do like to have some control over which direction the story is going.

Cheesecake games with the 'No Sexual Content'-tag. I don't mind good games that have no sexual content. Doki Doki Literature Club, for example. But if cheesecake and teasing are very clearly the game's only appeal, then I'm not gonna touch it. A worksafe dating sim? Miss me with that shit.

Anything with only male protagonists that's tagged 'lesbian'. If I'm looking for girl-girl content, I'm not looking for stuff that's >95% the same dude getting his dick wet. Especially not if the 'lesbian content' is just a girl-girl-guy threesome. (in theory it's entirely possible to have a good lesbian-themed game with a male protagonist, but then we're talking about a story where the protagonist isn't the one having all the sex - and the average porngame doesn't roll that way)

Hard avoid tags (Zero interest in these themes):
- Rape
- Netorare

Soft avoid tags (Played too many games with these themes already, not too interested in them anymore):
- Incest
- School setting

Prefer Renpy and some HTML games; Unity and Unreal games are generally too badly optimised (exceptions for things like Last Hope), and I don't have enough time to play RPGM games anymore, despite having liked some of them in the past. Most of them use very dated and rudimentary adventure game mechanics anyway, I'd rather go through a smooth VN than a clunky game.

RPGM games. They tend be heavily padded with a whole lot of walking back and forth. A whole lot of go home and rest in your bed 17 times to advance your character rep to progress. And constantly needing to figure out what the hell you're even supposed to be doing at any given point.

I now know how to cure that problem: Arrange for your laptop to be struck by lightning...

I'm not a big fan of games where it's just the protagonist being raped constantly. I also hate games with ugly bastards.

One i didn't think of:

...and also, now you remind me, SCAT.

Or VORE, for that matter.

Yep - GENERALLY. There have been exceptions...
Depends. Games like "A Wife's Phone" and "Office Queen" where the NTR is typical F95 racist interracial ... nope.

Other ways of presentation - maybe

The only RPGM game i played through {and that was partly because i didn't realise it was RPGM} was "Cohabitation", which played just about a Renpy game.

Also it was like my first month here...

VNs, though sometimes the prefix is misapplied and I'm sure I've missed out on good games because of it. I would say if there are RPG mechanics it's not a VN, but then you have stuff like GGGB which have stats and resources, and still I would struggle not to call them VNs. So I'd say if it has gameplay elements that aren't managed through multiple-choice menus, it's not a VN. I'm sure even then there are examples to the contrary.

Any kind of MTL is out.

When it comes to fetishes I tend to avoid games with gay, furry, futanari, sissyfication, bimbofication, vore, ugly bastard, scat and lesbian content unless it is optional, avoidable or skippable, I'm a open minded and tolerant man and I love when games have a wide variety of content and options even if it is something I don't like so I'm fine with any fetish in my games as long as I can avoid those I don't enjoy while playing.

Moving on to art I'm not picky and can enjoy games from handmade art, to AI and games made with illusion models but I dislike games without any artistic sense: Uncanny faces, cheap animations, ugly colour scheme, messed up proportions, etc. but if the gameplay is engaging and the story is good enough I can overlook those things and enjoy the game, for me when it comes to the game's art the only no-no is Real porn, it looks cheap and lazy to me and if it's made on HTML it's even worse, is like the laziest combo to me, I can tolerate and even enjoy AI if is well done and the characters look consistent between scenes but real porn is a turn off.

One thing I didn't note in my original post, is I also tend to avoid "initial release" games here. Even if they look like they might be good... very often the game doesn't have enough content to even make it worth my time.

In an AVN, I avoid everything that is not RenPy, everything. I like to have control and only RenPy gives me that... And for the rest, I generally avoid Sandbox.
I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to sandbox games. I don't mind playing them if I can figure out where to go, and when. There's a couple games where their overall 'sandbox' is such that it's not hard to track where various characters you can interact with are; or where your next quest is targeted.

Having said that, if I have to spend 20 minutes figuring out where to go, or what to do? Nope nope nope.
