Not my kink but I don't think there's 1 obvious story angle that all incest fans want. Some, maybe a minority, insist that incest includes corruption. Others don't want actual corruption but want that "taboo" is a big theme in the story. And a few don't want that taboo theme and only want the incest to happen like "pure vanilla" wholesomeness. Might be an idea to post a link to your question here btw.

My story suggestion is to avoid clichés like family members shouting the MC's name when they masturbate, and everybody locking their bedroom doors. But you're probably gonna use a few of the old clichés if you get anywhere with your project.

Multiple incest plots could be good.

Some prefer a dramatic focus in the taboo aspect, with emotional turmoil and slow burn romance, but too slow and It makes a poor porn game.

Some like a perverted and lightly hearted comedy, but its easy too get too smutty and repetitive loosing the appeal.

I personally like the "shy mom falls in Love with her son" this doujin being the Holy Graal to me:
But i also like the loving mother getting carried away:

This one ( ) has a more dramatic take on kind mother turning bitter, revenge and romantic resolution, a very good one.

Brother and sister against the world duo where they fall for each other.

There are myriads of plots to follow, a good incest story must be a good story first, so set a ground plot, a set of characters and relationships you want in it and try to write the story in a way that the characters and the plot work together.

VNDB shows that Bro/sis is the most popular theme in the novels (mostly japanese ones), after it mother/son, cousin and father/daughter pretty close and aunt/nephew after it.

I agree with jaike, except completely disagree about cliches and tropes. when writing a genre story cliches and tropes are exactly what the audience is looking for. new writers and non-incest fan writers often make the mistake of thinking the audience does NOT want what all the games are offering, when the reality is the opposite.

I've never seen an 'original story' gain any traction whatsoever, where as the worst machine translated russian grind incest house game with dead dad will gain thousands of views and 5-10 pages of comments the first day. even the worst shit version of that will get 100x more interest than a 'well-written original story' where the dev attemps to break the mold.

that said, there's a whole bunch of small things you should avoid IMO. like:

-game starts with mc waking up in his bed, then goes to shower to look at his dick. if you're really into cocks then go ahead, but for straight audience nobody is interested in that.
-jaike is right about the women saying your name while masturbating. it ruins ANY feeble suspense you've managed to build over whether the girls like you or not. keep them guessing, that's just basic writing craftmanship. because it works.
-"fair enough." -don't use that unless mc is a 40-50yo man. don't make women talk like a 40yo man. in general be super careful about the tone your characters speak in. a 16yo permanently horny semi-rapist son doesn't call mom a "goddess", her rack "magnificent" etc.
-never ever EVER describe a MILF as "she could still pass for a 20yo", that is the opposite of the fetish people look for.
-no default girlfriends at the start of the game. nobody wants that, every girl should be a conquest.
-'fake choices' annoy the shit out of people. if you give them three options to choose from, you can't then force them to that one and only option that will continue the story. few things are more aggravating than being railroaded like it's a kinetic novel.
-overly long mega dicks. this is the #1 thing people hate in every poll ever had. it can be huge, in real world sense, but not a baseball bat. (unless ofc you're a big fan of cocks, then knock yourself out).
-no 'best friends' of mc. unless you're making ntr nobody wants that other guy around. but this is more up to your taste than the other points.

there probably a million others I'm not remembering right now.

The most important part of incest is having shared history. Family members are more than just people that share a house with. They will feel generic if you just make your characters live together without taking into account that these characters know each other better than anyone else. Common tropes like "mother you haven't seen in years" or "bitchy older sister who used to be your best friend but now doesn't talk to you" completely miss the point of incest because they set them up as "new" heroines for the sake of following the standard VN format of getting to know a girl while building a relationship. In a good incest story, the MC/family member will already have a strong relationship, and the character development will come from how and why that relationship evolves into something taboo.

Don't try to be logical. Incest is generally not a logical thing. Use the scenario you think is the most arousing.
I disagree. A strong platonic relationship evolving into a sexual relationship is extremely logical in the absence of societal pressures and cultural norms. Therefore, another key to making a good incest story is giving a plausible reason for these pressures to be absent or overcome. Here are some common takes:
  • Post-Apocalyptic - Zombies, nukes, plague, etc. destroy society and families become closer than ever in order to survive.
  • Isolation - Family members can be trapped on an island or in a bunker or on a spaceship with nobody else to judge them.
  • Extraordinary Circumstances - Family members involved in a unique bonding experience have their relationship tested and strengthened so much that they overcome the taboo.
  • Magic - Mind control/corruption override typical reactions to incest. (Hardest to turn into a good story)
For an in depth example, look at the game Bare Witness which I loved so much, I rewrote it to fit my preferences even more. The main character is in witness protection (isolation) and has to live in secret. He accidentally runs into his cousin, or sister in my version, and she becomes his emotional support pillar during this stressful time because she alone knows his real identity (shared history.) The MC gets entangled with a couple and ends up in a strange open relationship (extraordinary circumstance), which shows him how easily social norms can be broken. This allows him to be more open to the idea of incest when his cousin/sister confesses that she has had a crush on him for a long time. Yada yada, more things happen that isolate them and allow them to bond, and they live happily ever after.

edit: TL;DR It's unrealistic for a normal family living in a normal house doing normal things to turn to incest.

My suggestion was about those 2 specific cliches, "MC's name shouting during masturbation" and "half way house bedrooms". Tropes are impossible to avoid, and that some will be cliches is hard to avoid. Only trying to avoid those 2 shouldn't be hard.

Common tropes like "mother you haven't seen in years"
I get your point and in general agree with most of what you said, but this one thing has other functions which explain its common use:

-it's used to hide from patreon by structuring a story where 'friend of the family' or 'landlady' can be easily converted into mom.

-reluctance to incestuous pairing DOES have a biological reason behind it, a psychological mechanism that developes if you grow up together, but not if you grow up separated. a lot of incest stories are trying to model this to make the story more realistic. it's not only societal peer pressure.

the randomly hostile big sister trope I think is just people not knowing how to write, so their attempt at 'writing character' is to make her mean. but when you see a nice big sister like caroline in milfy city it's pretty clear how that's a far better starting point. you can still make her angry when story calls for it, but now it'll feel like she has a reason.

but I certainly would like to see more more moms that never were absent from mc's life. I do agree it would have more potential for creating the tension incest games are based on. it's super hard to monetize something like that right now though.

I like locked doors and drawers hiding stuff. it creates the atmosphere of doing something you're not supposed to do. forbidden secrets. computers with passwords.

I understand why they do it, I was just giving my input on what makes a good story, not what makes infinite patreon bucks for following the standard 3 girl incest slop formula.

edit: as for the biology stuff, my understanding is that it's not been heavily researched for obvious reasons and is clearly not insurmountable given the historical existence of incest (consensual or otherwise)

It's hard to say.
People like incest because it's taboo but there are some stories that don't really focus on the taboo aspect.
People like incest because of the shared history makes the relationship unique but then again how is that different from a childhood friend.
I would just suggest finding what you like and try to figure out why you like it.

Dreaming of Dana (I think that was the title) is a highly regarded classic that tries to keep things pretty grounded.

It just depends on what you want to write. I agree that most stories involving the tag are intentionally unrealistic and that's fine.

hey
I'll just paste one of my comments

'
Guys I'm looking for a very specific niche...

I'm into slowburn corruption fantasy, where the mom isn't too horny too early and gives in quickly. Its mind blowing for me to find a game where the mom is actually reluctant for a long time without feeling horny, as if she is doing a favour for maybe the son's grades, or if he's getting bullied etc. Its a plus point for me if there's alot of 'convincing the mom', eg son convinces the mom into a strip chess game or something similar where if you lose a round you need to lose a layer of clothing or say the son wants a reward for getting high grades, nothing too much, something like just feel her ass(son takes his chance by spanking and the mom is angry af) or just yk touching her tits (on the 2nd or 3rd time of doing this, the son tries to take advantage by trying to unbutton her and she's angry af) , for me these small teasing elements are hotter than straightup sex. I feel the fantasy just dies if the mom is feeling equally horny and they just have sex...the mom should be very embarrassed throughout the whole thing and there should be alot of fus for the mom to even yk like show her breasts.

you can get a good idea of what im talking about from games like restore her career, true bond, heart problem, living with vicky(wtf is the milf so ugly bro whyy) or comics like my mom is a pornstar(nandof), comics by circle spice and natsume benkei, manwha living with a milf (atleast the first 20 chapters)

examples:
1. mom and son stuck on abandoned island
2. mom,son struggling financially, son gives mom idea to open an onlyfans, mom is reluctant initially but later agrees.
3. something similar to the guide by jdseal (it was really good until a certain point but after that idk what the fuck happened)
4. mom gets a job in stripclub to finance her son's education
5. son has a certain disease where he has to be jacked off
6. mom decides to reward son sexually if he improves his grades
7.mom is already a porn star, son is very depressed due to diff reasons, so she decides to help him
8.son is adopted, and is very sad, mom decides to cheer him up wearing a slightly provocative dress, slowly it escalates as the son starts choosing the dresses (can take idea from true bond)
9.mom needs her son's semen for some science shit '

Personally, I'm into the incest+harem+creampie+pregnancy combo. As for incest types, I like brother+sister, father+daughter, and on some occasions, uncle+niece (I'm a guy in my 40s myself). I only go for mom+son and grandmother+grandson if it's part of the "package deal" with my other kinks.

Also, with every harem story idea, you should account for the fact that people don't want every girl you offer as a love interest. You should give the player the possibily to reject (remain as friends) with every potential love interest.

Some comments on a previous list:
-no default girlfriends at the start of the game. nobody wants that, every girl should be a conquest.
Maybe, maybe not. If well enough written, it could still work. Like a girlfriend who wants to share you (the MC) with other girls, and gets off on that very idea (and would even be willing to get other girls on board with the idea of sharing and/or being part of a harem).

-no 'best friends' of mc. unless you're making ntr nobody wants that other guy around. but this is more up to your taste than the other points.
Gay best friend could also work, though (like in My Dorm). But yes, you should be careful with any "best friend" of MC is presented. If they're already in a relationship, make sure that friend's partner couldn't be a potential love interest to the MC (unless that friend is an impotent cuck who's unable to be with that partner sexually). Again, be careful when writing such characters, since you can easily write yourself into a corner on that aspect. The "safe" solution is to make that friend asexual or a potential gay sidepiece (if you aim for your male MC to be bisexual).

For inspiration on how to handle friends that don't interfere with your harem, I'd suggest taking a look at Sorcerer by Talothral (no incest, but it has a harem) - there, you meet up with a friend group (from MC's military days) somewhat regularly at a bar/club, although this is more of a side story element. The friend group consists of two guys (and their respective partners) and a woman (who later can be added to your harem).

For inspiration on overblown harem stories with fun elements, check out Grandma's House and Motherless.

Most importantly, though, write a story that includes your own kinks. Find out what your story will be about (taking inspiration from other stories, without copying too closely), make a rough outline of how you want your story to progress (just so you have a general plan going forward), and make sure that every kink and love interest can be opted out by the player without impacting the overall story too much. Find games you like, and include parts of what you like about them.

What matters is that you make a story that's your own, don't rush it, and try not let outsiders influence you too much on how you continue your story along the way. Sure, take feedback along the way, but only include what makes sense to you. Also, ignore the trolls. And when it comes to progress, don't set a too strict release timeline for yourself until you've gotten a lot of experience. A few good examples to aim for are Grandma's House (mentioned earlier) by Moonbox and Tribulations of a Mage by Talothral (who has already had several completed stories out). Both have pretty consistent release dates (twice a month) with decently portioned out chapters/contents. A bad example to avoid is WVM by Braindrop. The story is decent, but the developer has proven to be inconsistent with target release dates and progress goals they've set for themselves, and the game thread is basically punishing them for that (even mocking the dev for their reasons for flaking out). It has ended up becoming a cautionary tale of what not to do when it comes to overpromising on progress.

In general, I've seen many examples of VNs on here that fall apart and/or get abandoned because the author lost interest due to how the development went off track, either by including too much of the feedback or letting the feedback get to them. Make sure you don't fall into that trap.

BTW, if you plan on gaining monetary support during development, make sure incest can only be activated by adding a "fan-made" patch (examples: My Dorm and Grandma's House, mentioned above) or by manually entering relationships either at the beginning or when the character is introduced in the story (example: Motherless, mentioned above). Patreon and Itch have been cracking down on adult VNs lately, especially when incest is included. SubscribeStar also technically has this disallowed in their terms of service, and even though they've been more lax in enforcing this, I think they won't hold out too much longer.

Remember you can't make it quick to action (bad) and realistic (good) at the same time. Real people need to leap over huge moral hurdles before committing incest and it's all right. A good incest game (or a story, for that matter) needs to be a sloooooow buuuuuurn. You need to understand (and make the players understand) what makes people do it in real life.

Tip: you can get ChatGPT to help you understand the character's motivations for breaking such a taboo. I wrote a story about a female teacher fucking her male students and I wanted to make it as realistic as possible, and ChatGPT proved super helpful for understanding the characters' motivations.

As for cliches: try to avoid them unless you find them super hot. If I wrote a contemporary cest game/story today, I would absolutely add a massage/lotion scene because I personally love these, but would probably skip "mom catching son masturbating" because these do nothing for me. My point is: some Clichés are that for a reason, because people really enjoy them. Don't try to avoid tropes completely, but use them sparingly.

Good luck!

Some people have given good advice, particularly avoid the "I haven't seen them in years" but to make it very basic, a core rule to follow, the mom has to feel like the MC's mother, the taboo is very superficial without it.

Power Vacuum, Demon Deals, are 2 of the best examples of doing it right, she cares for the MC as a son first and foremost, she has a developed personality and the wrongness weighs on her mind. The characters are not just female characters with the labels.

It varies a lot from person to person, people will like different things within that genre so I can only say the things I am into and not into.

What I don't like seeing:

-I don't like seeing romance with family members
Sure I'm degenerate enough to be into the incest fantasy, I'm not broken enough to want to see characters form romantic bonds with their mom or sis. Fucking them, corrupting them, training them? Sure. But trying to Marry your mom or sis or live in some fucked up family dynamic where your sis is your daughter and your mom is your gf just feels weird to me. And yes I know how this sounds. Find a way to retain the status quo but also having sexy-time with your fam at the same time.

-Characters too easy to get or too easily suggestible/corruptible
There needs to be resistance for it to feel rewarding, if characters are too easy it doesn't really feel like you've done anything, might as well be a kinetic novel than a game. I actually like it when their personalities are more on the bitchy/moany side because it makes for more interesting situations, and feels like you really get somewhere when they start to give in to the corruption.

-When characters lose their personality to being a slut
I've played too many games where a character loses their personality and role to just being a basic slut, it makes that character boring and the game feel flat. I like the character still retaining their personality, but maybe just a more corrupted version of it but not losing their personality quirks or limits.

-The same boring sex positions reused over and over.
There are games that reuse the same positions over and over, different scene, different animation but the same position, like there are more poses than just doggy, missionary, cowgirl and mating press. I'd like to see more interesting positions, maybe using the environment as part of it, I like to see how flexible the characters can be, maybe experiment with more interesting angles and POV's.

In terms of gameplay for your game its really up to you on what or how you want it to work, but make the game that you want to make not what people tell you to make. And overall take your time with it. Don't try to please everyone. Stick to fewer fetishes and do them really well than trying to cram 100s of fetishes in your game and doing them all poorly.
