What would be considered as a text based game? Would this?

Hi!

I hope I can ask this here. I think I put the question as a way of discussion. I considered myself a writer and no artist and was wondering what is regarded as a text-based game?

Are they only text and nothing else?

What I really want to know is: would an RPG maker game (I know. I know. Not a lot of people like RPG maker games.) with no images be labeled/considered a text-based game? Or just a game+ fetish tags.

Honestly, I’d love to make an RPG game with lewd aspects, but sadly I’d focus more on the story and such.

I wouldn’t sell the game, and it would be free if that matters, but I just wanted to see what it would fall under.

Sorry if it’s a dumb question; I just wanted to make sure. I mean, when I search text-based, I find the full text only.

Thanks for reading and forgive me if this isn’t the best place to ask this!

Yes, see here: text-based RPG Maker games
A few of them have only default assets (e.g. The Poor Whore iirc), other games have some custom art.

Edit: from the tag list

Thank you! I had no idea I could even search games like that... what have I been doing? geez.

Yeah, I am thinking I'd use custom assets and not default as I do want to build a SFW game and a NSFW game lol. So I already paid for tilesets and other stuff. I just don't have art to show.

This helps a lot. thank you!

Just as my personal opinion I would tie it to the nature of the sexual/pornographic content. Even then "text-based" does not necessarily mean "exclusively text" but fairly close. For example if you're making an exhibitionism sim with detailed paragraphs on what characters see, hear and feel while the only visuals are a naked RPGM overworld sprite and a portrait that's basically still just text. However if you have a full character overview with live updates for e.g. sweat, body writing and cum and show NPC reactions via them turning to follow you and various icons or other FX attached to them then you're creating a visual sex scene even if you still have considerable amounts of dialogue or more subtle details your sprites can't show, such as the difference between cheerful, lewd and menacing grins for "random, faceless" NPCs.

Thank you. This opens my eyes and answers any questions I didn't ask yet. Yeah, I do plan on using Sounds and faces. I am not sure about naked sprites just yet, but I will focus on the things that I can do, like writing, character grinning, and such. Make the world seem alive even though there are no pictures. I think it's still possible.

I appreciate your input!

Have a look at "fenoxo" and his games. They are mainly texted based and he goes very well with them.
