What's a game that comes to mind when you hear "it insists upon itself"?

I'm talking about games that are on this site (both finished and still in progress). And, of course, we're talking about games on here that a lot of people enjoy, but you don't enjoy with the phrase above being one of them.

People don't understand how things like Summertime Saga work, and instead of saying, "This is clearly not for me" they just keep complaining.

If I had to think about a game that 'Insists on Itself' it'd probably be.... BMO TV? Dev has a reputation for getting into arguments with his fans and it usually boils down to, "well it's not within my vision for this game" in between some awful QA work and releasing borderline unplayable updates. Usually don't want to talk about 'vision' when your game has a memory leak that has a game that wouldn't feel out of place on 20 year old hardware gorging itself on north of 8 GB of ram before it just straight up crashes.

So, 1st thing (not a game) that comes to mind: Cowboy Bebop (but deservedly)

I wil have to say any porngraphic genre will feel this way after you see it once. Incest, Harem, NTR doesn't matter. It will feel pretentious while trying show as interesting, but in the end it's tropey based on some other successful entry of their respective genre.

I always felt this way about NLT Media games sexual content, even though I love playing their games because it reminds me mystery/detective game like old Agatha Christie games from back in the day, but when it comes to sexual content it uses over the top sexual positions that's used on Porn frequently, girls act like they are in the porn movies. You can clearly tell it's based on Porn, not actual sexual intercourse.

Demon Roots. From the very beginning it tries to shove it's "humans are the real monsters" message down your throat. Then the main character's evil "mind control" ends up just being "I have defeated you in honorable combat so you must be willing to ally with me and maybe see things from my point of view" power of friendship Shounen bullshit. Aside from that, the game is really basic RPGMaker fare with some nice art.

I wouldn't say that I don't enjoy these 2 games, cuz I do, but Leap of Faith and Chasing Sunsets come to mind.

I'll throw in any game with a serious, edgy protagonist. It just doesn't really work 99/100 times and comes across as whining in situations that really don't call for it, making the MC look like a massive bitch.

This is why (mostly) non-serious MCs are way better, like the one in the new hit futa game Salacious Sakura.

The thing is with writing is that ''it insists upon itself'' actually does work as a motif, provided that you are--ironically--a fashionably bad enough writer to pull it off.

Take a look at Hideo Kojima games. They're expensive, they're loud. The writing is absolute soup. Nothing makes sense. But you know what it is?

Although in a way I agree because it started super strong, and over time the episodes got real dull to the point I zoned out. I liked the music though.

I loved most Metal Gears, but I bounced hard off of Death Stranding and MGS V. I have no idea how they made a Death Stranding II.


I'm not sure what would be a game like that for me though. Maybe modern Bethesda games.

Oh maybe I got one- Subverse.

I seem to recall they marketed it as going to be something like Mass Effect, and it ended up some weird arcade asteroids clone and a cumbersome turn based grid combat thing where all the sex scenes were just stuff you got in like a simulator.

Not sure if it improved on that any, but I usually don't get high hopes for porn games but that one did have me thinking it was going to become something above and beyond in terms of making a porny yet still very game-y kind of RPG game.
